How do you explain this Feast Day to your young children (grades 1-3)?    What are you making and cooking on Wed. to celebrate this Feast Day?

I have the craft idea from last year (don't have a link, though, sorry!), using a baby food jar, a laminated picture of the Transfiguration, and some glitter. I want to have my two youngsters make it, but I'm not sure of the connection. Thoughts, please?

I tracked down a link to the craft, Craft of the Week from Cindy Mac, posted on her blog. It's such a lovely visual reminder of the feast. I don't think it's meant to be necessarily symbolic, except the glitter showing the brilliancy of the transfigured Christ.

I posted a few excerpts on the Transfiguration that can help you explain the feast to your children.

After searching and searching, I was surprised that I didn't find much discussion on the feast of the Transfiguration on August 6. Must be that everyone is busy with the end of summer/beginning of school.

So besides the above, here are some links:

Catholic Culture, including the recipe Barbecue Pilaf from The Cook's Blessings by Demetria Taylor and Spiced Grape Jelly from Feast Day Cookbook by Katherine Burton and Helmut Ripperger

These will be my stepping stones for foods and drink:

From The Cook's Blessings:
The Eastern Church celebrates the Feast of the Transfiguration with ceremonies and processions to the Church where sheaves of wheat, baskets of fruit, and clusters of flowers decorate the altar. When the religious celebration is over, a fair is held, and a pilaf made of cracked wheat is the feature of the feasting.

In Rome raisins are blessed on this day, and new wine is used in the Mass.


and Feast Day Cookbook:

Traditionally on the Feast of the Transfiguration, the Pope presses a bunch of ripe grapes into the chalice at Mass or uses new wine. Also in Rome raisins are blessed on the Feast of the Transfiguration, and the Greek and Russian Churches too conduct a special ceremony for blessing grapes and other fruits. Since the grape is given so much prominence on this feast, seems appropriate for the grape jelly recipe.


Simple ideas: broccoli salad with raisins,

a glass of wine with dh (I wrote a blue streak on feast day wine ideas at Catholic Cuisine.).

Biscuits with grape jelly (one of my favorite combinations)

We're keeping it simple, as there are lot of other events going on with the family right now.

I might put out a white tablecloth and have everyone wear a white shirt for Mass.

We have just come home from the Transfiguration Mass (we're in Australia) and it was beautiful, especially for me.

My 14yodd does the readings at weekday Masses fairly regularly, but tonight I was asked for the first time. I'm a convert of 3 years, but only received into the Church this past March, and having the honour of being asked to do the readings tonight was incredibly humbling and special.
