Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

This summer I really want to focus on charity within our own home...working together, playing together, etc. but with unselfishness, kind words, politeness towards adults, manners, etc.

I feel my time and effort is put too much into curriculum planning and not enough into character formation....which is SO important.

I think we could all(meaning my family) use improvement in this area. You ladies have such good ideas. Any suggestions?

Thank you:)

I was hoping to try to use The 21 Rules of This House by Gregg Harris. Just reviewing those that apply to us each week at breakfast and using the coloring page as a poster.
The 21 rules are a lot though But, how I would LOVE them to be applied everyday here.
Looking forward to others' suggestions.

Here's another resource to consider...from the Clarkson's.
Knowing their other publications and philosophies, I'm sure it's a treasure, and it comes highly recommended from a mom I trust.

Wow - we are all on the same wavelength!

This is exactly what we are concentrating on this summer.

We are using
21 Rules (mentioned above)
Uncommon Courtesy for kids - also by Greg and Joshua Harris
Our 24 Family Ways mentioned above
(we used all of these 2 years ago - but time to do them again)

We are also reading a lot of Manners Picture Books - I will send you my list later. Also Everyday Graces, Book of Virtues for Kids and other Bennett books

BUT I have to say that the main element is to restore our prayer schedule - when we pray together as a family all goes so much better. I feel that so much comes in the way of praying - I am so working on restoring the rhythms of prayer.

I also have some Montessori courtesy lists and plans - I can try to find links to.

These are great ideas and it also goes with what we are working on this summer as well for our family. So far, we are spending more time together also-not just being in the same house but doing things together while here.

We have started spending time with a family we enjoy where the mother speaks beautifully to her kids all the time. When she's not around, I pretend I'm her. So far, me just working on myself has made a big difference.

Ditto! Mama definitely sets the tone - and when I hear bad tones I have to examine my own! So hard not to be cranky when one is tired. But it is a habit like everything else.

Prayer is the huge thing for me. I seem to be finding it so hard to keep our prayer routines - and my own prayer time - all sorts of distractions - but when prayers has its proper place - all is so much better.

Yes, I am taking a look at my responses to my children. i am reading A Charlotte Mason Companion (again) and stopped for a while(after reading about the training of the will) to focus on character. I pretty much know what i am going to do curriculum wise at home...but I much rather focus right now on holiness, prayer, working together as our own little domestic church. I am loving the advice above!!!

For a while we had a poster up with our 'rules' -- very similar to the 21 rules but phrased positively and briefly to suit the ages of my kids.

It went something like this:
Kind hands (ie no hitting, and helping others)
Kind words
Kind voice (no shouting)

I can't remember the rest but I do remember that the dc wanted to include 'kind teeth' because they didn't like it when I spoke to them through gritted teeth -- which ties in with Mummy setting the example...

What great resources! I am definitely going to have to get some of these when we move to our new house. This has been on my mind lately as well.

We have the book Everyday Graces and i want to get The Childrens Book of Virtues as well. Does anyone have Devotional Stories for Little Folks 1 or 2 by CHC? What do you think of it?

Prayer works wonders. I often find that when we make time for prayer, my children dont necessarily act like angels, but rather we handle daily struggles much better, with the help of His grace. I am trying hard to have family prayer throughout the day, not just once a day. We also stopped saying the Rosary. That is another thing i am working towards and praying about. Having my own quiet time to pray and reflect is important as well.
