MacBeth,
This was great for my son...I tossed it in today at the last minute; he wants me to read it aloud on Monday so he can hear it all. He actually did know about the battle itself (thank you, Age of Empires ), but the idea that someone would write a poem about the battle many centuries later really surprised him.
We also read some WWI poetry this week, so "Lepanto" fit right in from several points of view.
One of the great things about CCM is that all of these great relationships are obvious to our children from a young age. I really didn't figure that out until I was in college, studying European cultural and intellectual history and learning about the relationships between science, art, architecture, literature and politics. I'm so glad my children are learning about all of this now.

Was it the Battle of Lepanto that the Holy Father had a vision of? If it is the one I read of he foresaw a successful outcome. From this came the title of Mary Help of Chrisitans, he implored Her help.
Can anyone explain this better than me?

Yes, and this is from an EWTN article:
"At the hour of victory, St. Pope Pius V, who was hundreds of miles away at the Vatican, is said to have gotten up from a meeting, went over to a window, and exclaimed with supernatural radiance: 'The Christian fleet is victorious!' and shed tears of thanksgiving to God."

Some history of the title, Our Lady, Help of Christians. It sounds like the first usage isn't exactly known but could be attributed to warriors returning from Lepanto.

I had just found out that Mary under the title ofOur Lady, Help of Christians is the patron of Australia, so this feast is pertinent to you, right Erin?
May 24 is the actual feast, a solemnity in AUS, not celebrated at all in US. There are several links for further reading on this devotion on this page.
A final note: St. John Bosco had particular devotion to our Lady...so the Salesians continue this tradition. Our Lady, Help of Christians by John O'Connell explains this. The introduction of 4RealLearning boards says: "We glean from the writings of Charlotte Mason with great joy and we also find ourselves discussing and learning from St. Teresa Benedicta (Edith Stein), Pope John Paul II, Maria Montessori, and Saint John Bosco, among others." So all rabbit trails lead to home.

Not only this Jenn, but my childhood parish was Our Lady Help of Christians. I was baptised, made my Confession and First Holy Communion there and from there was Married. Also of course I attended the local school Our Lady Help of Christians.
My mother had also attended school there and made all her sacraments too. At my wedding many parishioners turned up to see me arrive. Really it was very sweet. They also raided their gardens to decorate the Church for us.
Some of my earliest memories are of getting of the school bus at the church. We would run in and pay a quick visit. Outside Father would be walking the grounds telling his beads. A quick hi to him and then we would run down the street to the school.
