Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I've spent quite a lot of time these past few weeks trying to figure out WHY God allowed Katrina to happen and more specifically WHY ME?? I know all things happen according to God's plan-what is it for me? Last night I was praying and felt I received an answer-God brought this on me in order for me to learn and practice the virtue of charity. But I'm kind of stuck-what exactly IS charity? And me with no CCC or reference materials and limited internet research time. I seem to remember a definition like "Loving God just because He is God and loving others in the same way" So-can someone give me a crash course in charity as a virtue and how to go about obtaining/advancing in it? Thanks!
Jennifer
I think this whole charity thing has something to do with my mother as well. My anger and frustration with her is eating me up. Lots of other things, besides the homeschooling stuff. Ok, gotta run. Looking forward to your wise replies!

Jennifer,

What a wonderful question! I want you to know that I've been following all that's going on with you and praying for you and your family.

Charity is something I was pulled into contemplating last year for some time. The circumstances were different, but your question just struck me.

Here's a couple of the CCC references that might be useful (there's many more. I tried to pull out the most pertinent ones):

1822 Charity is the theological virtue by which we love God above all things for his own sake, and our neighbor as ourselves for the love of God. (You did a pretty good paraphrase )

1825 Christ died out of love for us, while we were still "enemies." The Lord asks us to love as he does, even our enemies, to make ourselves the neighbor of those farthest away, and to love children and the poor as Christ himself.

I typed out some of my own thoughts on this, but somehow hit some key funny and everything but the catechism was deleted. I've learned that things like this are usually God's way of telling me something. Apparently my thoughts are not what you need now.    I hope this helps and I'll be watching to see what other's thoughts are on charity. I know that I was challenged in my own thoughts of charity as I considered them last year. (whew apparantly that was OK. No mysterious deleting. )
