In Mary Hood's book, The Joyful Home Schooler -- an excellent book, by the way -- she recommends reading the Psalms. A priest a couple of weeks ago also recommended reading the Psalms.
Does anyone know of a good Psalm book -- with all the Psalms preferably -- that would help me in my quest to be more joyful and less stressed?
Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated
Thanks!

Since nobody answered me, I took a chance on a couple of books on the psalms. One, by Thomas Merton was too shallow for my needs. The other Key to the Psalms -- has been reprinted by Roman Catholic Books. I got the original used, but the RCB is the same. This is a wonderful book if you're at all interested in learning about the psalms and adding them to your prayer life. I've been reading this one during my weekly adoration hour and it really is beautifully done.
She groups the psalms under various topics (God's plan, Messianic messages, etc) and gives some background and contemplative writings before the psalms. She than has thought-provoking discussion prayers at the end of each chapter. All 150 psalms are included (unlike Merton's book which just briefly touched on the the more usual psalms.
Just thought someone could use this info -- at Mass, when we're doing the responsorial psalms, I never really thinnk abuot what they're saying or referring to, ya'know?

Mary, I saw this post and was waiting for replies, but, though it is not Catholic, I thought I'd mention that I have enjoyed C. S. Lewis' Reflections on the Psalms. He does use the KJV, but his commentaries are quite thoughtful.

I saw a whole display of C.S.Lewis' books at Wal-mart today. Narnia will propel people to check out his other works.
And I plan to join the line-up. I have not read Lewis, as Macbeth knows.

Why not simply begin with the Divine Office which is the official prayer of the church divided up into hours of the day. Clergy and religious are supposed to pray the office (I think - I know our previous pastor always did and had his book with him at all times). Lay people are encouraged to join in this prayer.
Magnificat offers a simplified version (just morning and evening prayers). It is based on the psalms and follows the liturgical calendar of the church. You can get the books from Ignatius Press (adult version) or just use the Magnificat subscription.
There are a group of ladies at our church that pray morning prayers from the office immediately after morning Mass.

The most awesome commentary is the Navarre Bible. The Book of Psalms and Song of Solomon has the complete text with beautiful commentary from the Church Fathers, Tradition, the Saints, and Church Documents. I've been using the Navarre Gospels for meditation and it's been so enriching that I highly recommend it.

Mary,
I just saw this...and I would say anything by Mary Perkins Ryan is excellent. Good for you in finding it!
I had an out of print Psalms collection that listed in the back topics to pray certain Psalms...that was helpful.

Oh, I love the Navarre versions for the commentary. Thanks for the info about the Psalms. I don't have that one yet and this would be a really good one to have!
