Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Donna,

My now 9yos loved this book too ... we had gotten a very old copy thru ILL (from Fordham's library) and it had the original illustrations ... both Thomas and Maggie really loved that book.

JP (who was 3-1/2 at the time) enjoyed the story but I'm anxious to read it just to him over the next year or so ...

Bottom-line it's wonderful for both boys and girls!

I was wondering the same thing! My girls LOVE it - we are reading it again right now for the 3rd or 4th time, but I wasn't sure if I should buy it for my "all boy" newphew.

My son and I read it well after his First Communion (I think he was at least ten) and he enjoyed it tremendously.

We read it this year when my oldest just turned six and my two oldest liked the first couple of chapters. But then on chapter three or four (I can't remember now) JP said: "Mom, I'm not sure I know what you're reading about anymore."

So I decided we'd pull it out again when he is older. I think we'll read it just before he makes his first holy communion next year.

It is a beautiful book.

Yes, I read it every FHC year with my dc. This year I have a FHC ds and we are on chapter 15. We read a chapter a day. If I'm really feeling adventurous, I've been known to do a craft too after reading it. So far this will be my 3rd ds to read it too, and he always asks that we do it first!

I was worried he wouldn't "catch" it all, so sometimes I do some improvising of my own while reading it. I have definitely changed some vocabulary for them, like today I changed "vexed"...just because I wanted to be sure he got it.

Anyways, it's great. And I've heard there is a newer edition in color. I guess when ours falls apart, we'll go for that one!

This is slightly off subject but another book we always read out loud during the FHC year is Windeatt's book about Blessed Imelda. It's about a young girl, but ds's still have really enjoyed that one too.

(Just thought I'd help add those books up for you )

We have the audio version that Donna mentioned, and we LOVE it!! In fact we have ordered multiple copies to give as gifts. It is performed by Simonetta who has just a beautiful voice as well. I highly recommend it!

I just had a peep at the link as I have the book and would love a recorded voice to go with it, but is it only on cassette as it seems to be? No CD?

I've been watching for them to put it out on CD... But so far, all they have is just the set of 2 cassettes. My van has both CD & cassette players so this hasn't been a problem for us, but I wish they would put it out on CD just the same.

I am encouraged to try the book with ds! I also found this and thought I would give it a try.

Anyone have this recording?

We have the recording too, well done. We love it and have shared it with many friends. It's on par with the Regina Martyrum tapes IMO.

We are still waiting for the recording of the "King of the Golden City" to arrive - I am glad to hear others have enjoyed it! I too would have preferred a copy on CD but we do have a cassette player in one vehicle and one in the house.

We did just finish the Windeatt book on Blessed Imelda - but I have to say mine were a little incredulous about Imelda dying of "joy". They weren't upset or anything - more like "What- she died of joy???" I sort of improvised and said that little Imelda probably had the feeling that she was not going to live long on this earth - many children died early "in those days"- and Jesus made sure that her prayer to receive him in Holy Communion was answered before bringing her to live with him in Heaven.

I can see potential difficulties with the Imelda book - I am glad we didn't read it when my daughter Katie was younger - I could see some sensitive children wondering if they could possibly "die of joy" when they received FHC. But the book did foster some good conversation that's for sure!

I just noticed that the CDs are available now. But before buying them I would like to know what they are like. Are there any "background effects" or is it just read and sung?

We have this version of the audio CD and it is a huge hit with my boys. I have also given it several times as a gift to other FHC boys and they have enjoyed it. It is very well done.

Thanks, Heather. I also found a sample for another version later, after I had posted my question, here.
