I grew up Catholic, and went to Catholic school, but I feel like I need some HELP when it comes to the liturgical year...basically I want to understand it.
I will be homeschooling my 8th grader next year, and I have a 2yr old at home also. I'm not sure where to start teaching religion if I don't even fully understand why we do certain things....I'm hoping someone understands what I mean...
Any suggestions? Books, websites...whatever ideas anyone has to help me learn my Catholic faith better so that I am a least a little more comfortable teaching my children our wonderful faith.

Cay's Catholic Mosaic is the best place to start, I think.
You can do a search for it in this forum and find a link.

Your initial question was for understanding the liturgical year. And you also asked about resources to better understand the faith so I wanted to get some clarfication on what you are looking for since I would recommend different resources for each. Hands down, for ideas for celebrating the liturgical year and understanding the history and traditon behind that, the most complete resource is the Catholic Culture website. THey have an extensive Liturgical Year section that surpasses any yet compiled book resource. YOu really have to click through it and search the site to appreciate the wealth of information that is contained there on this topic.

I have some ideas for my favorite resources for general faith and apologetics education, but have no time right now - I'll get back to that.

Hi Marcia,

I really liked "The Year and Our Children" by Mary Reed Newland. I was very encouraged by her approach because they too were a Catholic family that sought to deepen their faith - it didn't just come naturally - they did work at it. I think she does a good job of explaining how she went about deepening her connection to the Church year - not so much that you feel you must do what they did but it helped me see the process.

I'll let others give more resources on teaching and learning the faith but for me - The St. Joseph Baltimore Catechisms have given me the clearest explanations and pictures of the Catholic faith. So simply put - yet beautiful. I still go back to them over and over.

Getting back to this: A couple resources online that I like for explaining the "why" behind the beliefs and practices are foudn at Catholic Answers(see library list in left column) and Catholics United for the Faith (CUF). They both have collections of tracts on various topics - very informative and straight forward. Easy to search by topic. I also recommend the Footprints of God series of dvds by Steve Ray. They may not be what you were looking for in regards to info on liturgical year, but they are extremely informative and engaging on teaching the tenets of the Catholic faith though scripture, history, and geography.
