So how do we get ourselves and our kids to follow this? When I first read it, I thought "well, no wonder he was declared a saint!"
How would you implement this idea in your home?

I've really tried to make sure our family follows through with commitments we've made to any group endeavor. Sometimes that has meant dealing with people that are more difficult to get along with.
I think it is very tempting for homeschoolers to leave a situation once it becomes uncomfortable rather than stick it out and work with people they don't like. But there is a fine line here, I think - when is a situation really destructive to individuals or family as opposed to being really, really annoying? KWIM?
I don't know that I've always done a good a job at this but I've really tried to teach my children to honor commitments even when it's not the most comfortable or they have trouble with certain individuals in a group.
I also try to help my children see an underlying reason why someone might be hurtful or grumpy all the time or just different. How can we help rather than react?
Personally, when someone offers a opinion that is different than mine I try to make it a habit to find something that is good in that person or the opinion - so maybe I think they are just dead wrong but I can admire their tenacity in their own view for instance.

This is a humble admission , but aren't there occasions when we seem that way to one another in our own families? Aren't there days when we seem unfriendly, ugrateful, and troublesome to one another?
One great way to practice this would be to be the mom or the child or the sibling we're supposed to e even when a family member is particularly irritable or disagreeable or ill-tempered that day. Of course, it would only be OCCASIONALLY !

Colleen, this is my Lent work. How can I exhort my children to be this way when I can't even do it???? I don't respond to my domestic monastery bells in a very cheerful way.
And it is so hard when one person is ill-tempered how it affects the whole household, and I don't have a quiver full.

It is hard. Lately everything has been an uphill battle for me and it's showing in how I respond to my children and husband. I'm working on it, but let's just say it's been a very, very hard Lent.
