Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I need to learn how to be silent more and how to incorporate this into our family life. Would anyone be able to recommend a book that might help me in this endeavor?

Sorry Martha- the server was down this morning so I was unable to post. Here are my recommendations:

The Practice of the Presence of God by Brother Lawrence

In the Spirit of Happiness by the Monks of New Skete Update: It's been recently brought to my attention that the Monks of New Skete are Orthodox (meaning: not faithful to the magisterium), and so please read this one with caution. While I did find some excellent spiritual advice in this book, there is mention of questionable practices such as Eastern Meditation. As always- any book written by those not faithful to the magisterium should be read with discernment. :)

In the Spirit of Happiness by the Monks of New Skete(This one is actually my favorite spiritual resource- it has so much good stuff in here on silence, and various other methods of prayer, like lectio divina.)

Just what I was looking for. Thanks!

Wonderful! We are reading Practice of the Presence for our book club this month AND I was going to come on here tonight asking about evenings and silence. Perfect.

This isn't a book, but I found the DVD Into Great Silence so amazing and inspiring to watch.

It's a 3 hour movie and we didn't sit and watch it straight through (Its an interesting movie that I can't even begin to explain here. I'd suggest to Google it or read the Wikipedia page about it) we watched about an hour or so a day until we got to the end.

It tends to be one of those things people either love or hate, we loved it here.

amazing movie

I love to sit and just absorb this movie, it is really a meditation more than a movie. I think Leonie started a thread about this last year????

No book recommendations here but a couple of practical tips,

Play the Silence Game, all be quiet, the one to talk first loses. Very popular here.

A friend monthly has a silent tea(dinner), a left over from her days in the convent. She tells me that it teaches the children to think of family members, ie. I want the salt so perhaps others may too, therefore they think to pass on.

I thought about this thread as I read Pope Benedict's message to the young people gathered today:

Have we perhaps lost something of the art of listening? Do you leave space to hear God's whisper, calling you forth into goodness? Friends, do not be afraid of silence or stillness, listen to God, adore him in the Eucharist. Let his word shape your journey as an unfolding of holiness.

That's inspiration enough for me to pursue silence more intentionally.
