Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

DH and I just saw this movie about JPII--it was wonderful.
I was a little doubtful at first, but I think it was really well done, and respectful. Apparently the filmakers has fairly open access at the Vatican etc, and it shows.
2 thumbs up!

I had to buy this after I saw it!

I loved it and it was very well done and respectful!

I believe that Jon Voight and Cary Elwes had a showing with dear Pope Benedict XVI, if I'm not mistaken!

Jon Voight is one of those actors that just really bugs me to watch but I do believe they did try to do a wonderful job. I just haven't been able to watch it because of him, yet. This one is one we have watched and very much enjoyed although it ends right when he is elevated so it focuses more on his pre-papacy history.

There is a companion one to that movie. http://www.amazon.com/Karol-Pope-Man-Piotr-Adamczyk/dp/B0009 MUBEY/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1199988288&sr=1-4

My in-laws gave us the two Adamaczyk ones as a set. I think they bought them through a company in Canada.

We very much them both enjoyed, but they're not appropriate for children... maybe some teens. It's been a while since we watched it. They definitely warned us not to watch it with the kids; I'm glad they did. Very nicely done, but, again, some not-so-kid-appropriate scenes.

Oh, thanks Kelly. I had no idea there was a second movie! From what I remembered, there were some intense scenes in the first movie that wouldn't be appropriate for children, but I didn't remember there being any inappropriate scenes. Would you agree with that assessment for the second one as well?

I am so glad this topic came up and that there are some good movies about JPII out there. It reminds me that I wanted to give a caution about this one:Life and Times ofPope John Paul II
I watched it awhile back and found it quite offensive in spots. The documentary itself wasn't so bad, but the bonus material that came with it is a bunch of garbage. It implies that he had a romantic relationship with a woman friend of his (really, so what if he did, he wasn't even a priest yet), it is disparaging of his reform efforts, questions priestly celibacy and the role of women, mocks the churches teachings on birth control, it even suggests that his role in the fall of communist USSR was inappropriate. It said that he shouldn't have been so against communism because he was trying to establish the same sort of "dictatorial rule" over the church.
Truly disgusting.

Matilda, it's been a while since I watched them, so I'm going on memory. I think most of the intensity is in the first movie. In the second, there is a brief issue relating to birth control (or was it abortion?, something "women's rights" or pro-life related... anyhow it's a conversation, not a protest or anything). It is handled very nicely, IMO. Plus, there's assassination attempt and his final days. I'd preview it first before showing it around kids, just to be sure it's appropriate for your crew.

For others interested, here are links to info about these two movies:

Karol, A Man who Became Pope (1st part of the series)
Karol - The Pope, the Man (2nd part of the series)

Matilda -- don't let Jon Voight being in it keep you from watching -- it is truly a wonderful film about JP2 the Great's life ... very well done. Honest!

Another good one is Witness to Hope which is a wonderful (and shorter) version of Weigel's book.

I loved the Jon Voight one - we saw it on PBS soon after he died and I'd love to see it again. I do have Witness to Hope but haven't watched all of it. And a friend recently recommended Karol, the Man Who Became Pope. I think she also mentioned it was more for older kids and adults.

I hear ya! Jon Voight kind of gets to me too ( I don't know why...) so the first couple of minutes were weird, but he really did such a great job, I was able to completley forget that he was Jon Voight!
I'm looking forward to watching the others as well.
