Celebrating Candlemas is new for us this year. I'm trying to get some beeswax candles made in time, but would it be totally inappropriate to have candles that are not 51% or more beeswax blessed for my home?
Also, how can you tell if something has a certain amount of beeswax? E.g. do the Advent candles in the Catholic catalogs like Leaflet Missal, etc. usually have some beeswax content? Or is that information usually listed in a candle's product description?
You might discern that I'm pretty new to beeswax, too.

Our priest in the past has blesses whatever we brought
We havent always been able to find/afford real beeswax.
I think last year our only options were petroleum or soy (we went with soy!).
Most good catalogs do tell what its made out of.
Now can someone tell me why/what the wax rule is about?
I have heard that its supposed to be just not why!

ok I found out why for beeswax...

It seems that it applies to liturgical rites so candles that you use for family meals/prayers it doesnt matter so much but is nice. while mass or annointing of the sick in your home would requre beeswax.

Gosh, this is all news to me! On the beeswax front -- how about those churches where they have fake candles with little lightbulbs at the top??

That's as aesthetically displeasing as a boombox in church.
No. Whatever burns in church must be burn for REAL.

My mom's closest parish has all electric votives...you drop in your quarter and viola your bulb is lit for 24 hrs. It feels like a parking meter 
Something about fire code or what not.
I think the sanctuary candle is electric too but I honestly cant remember about the altar candles.
I agree with you KathrynTherese EWWWW!

I can't remember where I read that for altar candles, real beeswax candles are a must. Those oil candles or electric are definitely not allowed.
But as far as votives, there is no regulation. I'm wondering if Italy has switched to electric because it's seen all the smoke damage over the years from the real candles?

Star of the Sea here in Key West had to switch to all electric candles years ago to meet the fire code and 12 years ago was nearly destroyed by an electrical fire caused by the electric candles. We now have banks of real candles again.

Our wonderful parish priest would encourage people to bring candles to be blessed on Candlemas to be used in the home and he never offered any rules or regulations on percentage of beeswax. I am certain that if there were requirements for in home blessed candles, he would have let us know.

I'm shocked! I've always linked the Old World with a reverence and preservation of traditional objects.
While I can see the fire code being a reason churches are having to change to the mechanical candles, I just don't care for it. 
I have also heard it said that it is due to the smoke ruining the church interior which is almost tongue in check because the church's of today aren't made to last the way the old churches were built.
I wrote about our church doing this in 2006. Due to public outcry, they did replace the candle altar...with mechanical candles. Candles and Reverence
