Our (very liberal) parish didn't even mention this feast in our Sunday bulletin or at Mass. I know this is a holy day of obligation. And it's one of the feasts that can't be moved to Sunday because it's on Saturday, right? We were confused because it wasn't mentioned, and dh suggested that while it is a holy day it's not one of obligation because it falls on a Saturday but that doesn't sound right to me. Help me out?

It's definitely a Holy Day of Opportunity (as our pastor calls it  ) so we need to go to Mass both Saturday (or Friday evening if there's a vigil) and Sunday for the 2nd Sunday of Advent..... hmmm.... where are you in California?

And you can see in the USCCB link that Angie posted, this feast is not one that can be moved to Sunday as some others can. Definitely still a Holy Day of Obligation.

Definitely a Holy Day of Obligation!
I'm wondering if perhaps the confusion fell not only because of all the other exceptions on Mondays and Saturdays, but do you remember a couple of years ago Dec. 8th fell on a Sunday (when the Sunday of Advent celebration took precedence) so then the feast day was moved to Monday, December 9th (and then it wasn't a Holy Day of Obligation)? That may have confused some people.
Updated to add: Well... I double-checked myself and a couple of years ago was 2002!! I guess people had several years to undo their confusion with my theory!!

Mary: We're in the San Jose area. We certainly have more conservative parishes, but I haven't been able to convince dh to change yet.
I have looked into 5 local churches (their online bulletins). TWO of the five mention the Feast of the Immaculate Conception (and list the times of the Masses). The other three, including my parish, don't mention it at all. It's so frustrating.
But thanks for your help!

I think what I found confusing this year was the fact that the Sat eve vigil mass doesn't count for the Holy Day even though it happens on the day. It comes up so rarely, I always forget about that.

Our pastor also refers to Holy Days of Obligation as a Holy Day of Opportunity.

Maybe at your parish, the person who did the bulletin missed the memo! (trying to assume the benefit of the doubt---it sure does happen here!)... What I would do is call your parish center and inquire as to what times the Masses for the Holy Day will be. Just assume there are going to be Masses and see what they say. (I'd be interested to know---I don't think parishes, regardless of how liberal they are, can actually opt to ignore or overlook HDofO...)

I did call and was informed of the regular Sat schedule. Unfortunately, I think our parish is just skipping it.

I was wondering if this is allowed, too....
Also, If I attend the Holy Day vigil Mass at 7pm on Friday, will that also "count" (for lack of a better word  ) with regards to fulfilling the First Friday Devotion? Everything I read about First Fridays refer to receiving communion on Friday. I don't think it has anything to do with whether, liturgically, it's Friday's Mass on Saturday's anticipatory Mass. Am I correct on this?

I believe when the holy day falls on a weekend it is left up to the Bishop to decide whether to keep it a day of obligation or not. He can grant a dispensation if he chooses.
I know our diocese is keeping it a holy day of obligation.

For the record, "skipping it" was my phrase. My parish has not said that. They just haven't acknowledged the feast day.
There are other parishes in our diocese who are celebrating the feast day, so I don't know if the Bishop gave a dispensation or perhaps left it up to the individual parish? I don't know, but am disappointed in the way our parish has handled it. I've been having some serious reservations about this parish and this just isn't helping. I assume if we go to a Saturday morning Mass we will meet our holy day obligation?

My parish has an interesting twist...
Because we have such a huge influx of *winter birds* (retired folks who winter here) our Saturday Masses to fulfill our Sunday obligation start at, gulp, 12:00 noon on Saturday. These will not, of course, fulfill our Holy Day of Obligation need. This year we have a Friday night, 5:00 p.m. Vigil Mass and 8:00 a.m. Saturday Mass. This was announced in our bullentin... phew  .

I thought it was part of universal Canon Law that Vigil Masses couldn't start before 4 pm. At EWTN, question was asked here and here , although a citation isn't given. Hmmm...

Curious isn't it, Noreen? Here is my best guess. The Bishop makes an annual exception because of similar reasons as used for extending the number of Masses on a holiday (the example in the second link.) It is as if our winter is an extended holiday for all of our retired friends, believe me! I've heard that our town population more than doubles each winter (feels more like a quadruples!) Therefore our situation isn't considered perpetual as much as cyclical, so I think the Bishop must technically make the exception each year. The summer schedule is proper. Honestly, I wouldn't know how else the Diocese could handle this situation. The church has been expanded, we bring in the folding chairs, yet the Masses are maxed...that's the bright side .

Oh! I moved from the San Jose area to Colorado in January. Have you checked out Our Lady of Peace? It's the most conservative (and awesome!) parish in the diocese. The priests there are wonderful!
