Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I wasn't quite sure where to post this as the idea is for a craft idea for our RCIC class
I'd like to have the children make soul cakes for All Soul's day but not sure what recipe to use if it is a good idea for all ages etc. We've never made them before .
do you decorate the cakes ? are they a yeast or a cake batter type dough ? I was thinking kind of a bun thing so they could mold the dough . maybe be have things they could add to the buns like shredded cheese raisens , nuts etc.
what do you think ? I'm getting hungery myself
Much Love , Roxie

They can be any sweet bread or cake. Traditional British soul cakes were sweet yeast buns. Cinnamon buns would work, but you could also make cupcakes - perhaps with some kind of faith symbols on top.

The tradition was that for every cake given, a soul would be released from purgatory, presumably because this act of charity was seen as doing penance for a departed soul. The cakes can be taken to a shelter or soup kitchen and given to the poor.

I found a nice variety of cultural recipes on the WGBH website.

Sound like a fun project!
