Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I blogged about our visit with a relic and the kids and I have lots of questions!

Would any of you kind ladies have hints, links, books, ideas, or otherwise help in aiding us in studying this?

Thanks!

Not knowing what form you'd like your study (lapbook, notebook, oral...) here are a couple of ideas that just came to mind.

These are just rambling thoughts from someone who puts everything into a lapbook or notebook.

Things to include:
~Definition of Relics

Scripture:
~The bones of Elisha caused a dead man to come back to life.   2 Kings 13:20-21

~Handkerchiefs or aprons touch by Saint Paul.    Acts 19:11-12

~Relics and the Incorruptibles    Very interesting read! Includes info from CCC and classification of relics. Also, where "famous" relics are in the world. (Geography study )

~Depending on your children's age research info on St. Helena's search for Jesus' relics.

~Explanation that all Catholic churches have relics built into the altar. Could use this to explain the early church in the catacombs...tombs of early saints.

~What happens when a church is torn down ....retrieving the relics....more info in this article: As churches close, relics hidden in altars face an uncertain fate -- The Boston Globe January 2007

~Research which Saint's relics are in YOUR church. Report on that saint or just include his/her/their name.

(I remember asking about this when I went through RCIA. It was confirmed that "yes" all churches have at least one relic in the Altar or Reliquaries, but the instructor had no idea who was in our church.)

~~Give examples of reliquaries.

Another interesting read from EWTN:

Father Saunders answering Why we venerate relics

excerpt... Perhaps in our technological age, the whole idea of relics may seem strange. Remember, all of us treasure things that have belonged to someone we love—a piece of clothing, another personal item, a lock of hair. Those "relics" remind us of the love we share with that person while he was still living and even after death. Our hearts are torn when we think about disposing of the very personal things of a deceased loved one. Even from an historical sense, at Ford's Theater Museum for instance, we can see things that belonged to President Lincoln, including the blood-stained pillow on which he died. More importantly, we treasure the relics of saints, the holy instruments of God.

I had other thoughts, but it's getting late...and most of all I don't know if this is what you are looking for.

What an amazing list of resources and ideas, Michaela!

Catholic Answers has a tract on Relics. It's a good apologetics lesson for older ones to read.

There are also many holy cards available through Catholic bookstores that contain third class relics on them. You could have the children each pick a saint or two and get those holy cards. Since you aren't supposed to buy/sell relics I'm assuming that what you are paying for is the holy card. Often the orders that a particular saint belonged to, will also make third class relics available.
