I have found double copies of several of our favorite books at library sales, etc. for practically no $$$.

Do any of you save more than one copy to pass along to more than one child? Or is this silly and hoarding? There is no guarantee that any of my girls are even going to WANT these crazy books when they are adults, etc. (What a scandal THAT would be!)

I got them with the intention of handing them on to friends, etc. But, I'm having a hard time parting with them even though we have a copy already.

For example:
Stephen's Feast
The Last Straw
A Christmas Story, Wildsmith
Year of the Perfect Christmas Tree

I love the idea of handing books down to children when they grow up. Even if your children might not want the books later on, your future grandchildren might, so I would save it for them. However, even if I didn't plan on doing that, I probably would save any book that was hard to find and out of print such as Stephen's Feast. My son can be pretty hard on books, so if something happened to a rare book it would be nice to have a spare.

If you found one that is OOP for practically no $$$ than I wouldn't have any guilt in that. You can always pass to your children, grandchildren, nieces/nephews, or a friend.

I only keep one copy of the other books because I just don't have room. We have a Catholic Mosaic shelf in the hallway and a Christmas Mosaic shelf in the sitting room cabinet...all with one copy.

As the children get married and start their own families I'll worry then about hoarding copies to give as gifts.

I don't hoard copies, but here's a little family tradition. If a book becomes someone's read-it-again favorite for a while, I write insode the cover with the year and their age. If someone has a cute or insightful thought about a book, I note that too. I fugure when they get older and I want to pass the books down, I'll be able to "remember" what was special to whom and my grandchildren will the enjoy the handwritten note that this was Daddy's favorite book when he was three. I just realized this is completetly irrelevant

I went through a stage of having no doubles as I felt guilty about just how many books we do own

Then I realised that if I did find a precious out of print book I would be foolish not to keep it for my 'grandchildren'

but the general things I feel God will look after and we will find when the time comes.

When I am op-shopping I have a running list in my head of which books my irl friends are searching for and what they do and don't already own, so I will pick up books for them too. So everyone is taken care of.
