Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Does anyone know of a good children's book about St. Martin of Tours? His feast is in November. So far, I can't even find anything about him in the children's books about Saints in general.

I have been searching abebooks.com (thanks to a link from another poster when I was searching for another book), but because of St. Martin's Press, I get lots and lots (thousands, in fact) of results that are irrelevent to my search.

My son also ADORES Michael the Archangel. He spent most of last year pretending to be Michael the Archangel. Michaelmas is a holiday celebrated in Waldorf schools in late autumn, and Id like to continue the tradition of a lantern walk and other festivities at our house.but I am having a great deal of difficulty locating appropriate books on the subject of Michael....it seems there are not really any children's books out there dedicated to him, which is a shame, as other little boys like mine would surely find the subject matter interesting and attractive.

I have a suggestion for St. Martin although it may not be exactly what you're looking for. In the Basilica of St. Francis in Assisi, there are several frescoes by Giotto depicting the life of St. Martin. They are some of the most famous artwork in this Church renowned for artwork.

Perhaps you might find at the library a book by Elvio Lunghi with the title The Basilica of St. Francis in Assisi (Scala Press)

Lives and Legends of the Saints
With Paintings from the great art museums of the world

also has a short entry on St. Martin of Tours.

Years ago when we first adopted my son and he couldn't speak English, we acted out stories from the lives of saints. This saint was one of the first he chose.

Thank you for this idea-- it sounds wonderful. I will check and see if our library has the book. Maybe we can make our own fresco once we have enjoyed the ones in the book!
Thanks so much.

I have not been able to find good picture books for St. Martin of Tours. I do have some suggestions of good read-alouds from compilations.

One of my favorites, and it's illustrated, is from Fifty-Seven Saints for Boys and Girls by the Daughters of St. Paul. I know they revised this book, so I can't verify the stories or pictures now, but the old version was great.

Saints of the Seasons for Children by Ethel Marbach Pochocki. This is combined volume of her four books on seasonal saints. St. Martin is in the volume Saints at Harvest-Time.

Oops, no it isn't. The archangels and Martin de Porres is in that volume, St. Martin of Tours is in her book More Once Upon A Time Saints.

And always delightful to read is the Joan Windham's stories. She has both St. Michael and St. Martin in her books, and they are included in Sixty Saints for Boys.

There are many great works of art depicting St. Michael and St. Martin, and these can be found on the internet to supplement the read alouds.

I would love to find a great saint book on St. Martin of Tours. He is a patron saint of horses and patron saint of our barn! Cav. officers in the Roman Legions had to love and depend on their horses, you know.

We have found nice St. Martin of Tours votive candles in the spanish section of the grocery store--just a few dollars. We bought a bunch and always put them out for his feast day. Last year we participated in our German School's procession with lanterns to celebrate St. Martin's feast day. We sang German songs and processed around a local lake. It was lovely. Even though the holiday has been way secularized in Germany, you can still get neat lanterns and goodies from various German culture sites. One year we made our own tall candles out of glass jars that we glued horse heads on, then covered with green cellophane and spray glitter. They were really pretty.

I'll check out the "More Once Upon A Time Saints" book. Thanks for the clue, Jenn.

I went to the library today and discovered a new-to-me book. Janette mentioned it in a St. Ambrose thread.

The book is called Brother Wolf, Sister Sparrow; Stories about Saints and Animals retold by Eric A. Kimmel, illustrated by John Winch.

This is a great book! There are 12 saints, each with a story or legend from his/her life relating to an animal. There is a chapter on St. Martin and the Goose.

The illustrations are interesting and captivating.

There 11 other saints are Ambrose, Blaise, Brendan, Brigid, Francis, Giles, Hormisdas, Hubert, Hugh, Kevin, and Notburga.

It's not a complete book on St. Martin...but great to include for his feast.

There is an abundance of St. Martin picture books in German. I figure, you could use the book for the pictures and just use your own text, if you would be so adventurous as to send to Germany for a book!!!!
We have the second book on the list, but I think 14 might also be a good one.

Check out www.amazon.de and search for Sankt Martin.

I just couldn't get the link to work.

Thank you all for the input and sharing of experiences.

Yes, we do the Martinmas Lantern Walk here too! We used to do it with my son's Waldorf School, but this year our family will be having one of our own. We have already begun creating our lanterns. We keep the lanterns each year and they are a lovely colorful addition to the nature table in our classroom. There is a great deal of symbolism in expressing our faith, through the lantern walk, that light will return to the world...a nice build-up, in my opinion, to the Advent Season when we wait for the Light of the World.

One of the things I love about this season is that we begin to prepare for a time of darkness, when we naturally turn inward toward home and heart. I think about the kinds of foods we eat in winter, the root vegetables, the warm hearty soups and stews, the baking before Christmas...and then the Light returns to the world in the midst of darkness and then a new year of seasons begins again.

The symbolism of this time of year, and that of St. Martin and St. Michael the Archangel, are a real comfort to me. I have struggled with depression at different times in my life, and I find that my mental state has a lot to do with how much natural light Im exposed to. For that reason, I take walks all year round. It's a little scary for me to think about entering winter, especially since I work shifts, but when I focus on the idea of turning inward in preparation for Advent, it really does give me great comfort.

I will definitely check out the books mentioned! Thanks so much for the input. Sorry bout the rambling post.

Any you would recommend over another? These look so cool. I KNEW Germany would have a lot.

Is this correct that there's a Playmobil St. Martin? Ooooh, I'd be in heaven, er, I mean my son would love that!

It sure looks like Playmobil to me! We don't have any Playmobil so I am not really up to date.

Jenn, I looked through the books on the list and chose the book, "Martin von Tours" by Josef Quadflieg, because the books we have by him are from a language and theological perspective best quality. Josef Quadflieg has translated almost all of the Tomie dePaola books we have in German. With Josef Quadflieg you can't go wrong.
If my link doesn't work, check out the 2nd page of books under Sankt Martin. It is no. 25.

We have the 2nd one, which is also good, but I am ordering the Quadflieg too!
