I'm going to try to gather all of the materials that I will be needing for Moira's Home Catechesis 3-5 presentations before school starts. Even though I have most of the Altar, Advent and Baptism materials, there is still much to make or purchase. I am hoping you will share where you have purchased the following items from, OR what you have done and what supplies you have used to make these items:
land and water globe
triad candelabras
miniature turtle doves in a cage prop
prop for the temple interior
seeds for The Mustard Seed parable (how have you contained/displayed them?)
photo of a real mustard tree
bird and nest prop
figures and buildings for The Pearl of Great Price parable
farmer figure and dwelling for The Hidden Treasure parable
And one more question:
Have you made a relief map of Israel? Did you follow Moira's instructions exactly? How did it turn out?

I can answer some of these:
for the mustard seeds- I have a great source, you send a SASE and 1$ and they send you a packet. I will dig up the addy and post it.
for figures I used the little wooden men you can get at Michaels and either painted or glued felt clothes on.
for a temple I used wedding cake pillars from Michaels, and foam core board for the base and roof.
doves I found at Michaels with the wedding stuff, haven't found a cage yet, I found birds and nests there too in the floral section
I have a foam globe (ball?) that is just blue and green that I used for the globe, I think it is from Learning Resources.
buildings I made out of cardboard and felt following Moira's templates.
candelabra I got from a catalog I googled online for dollhouse miniatures.
I made the relief map, in a wooden tray using some sort of clay/paper mache stuff I think it is called sculpt-a-mold. I followed Moira's instructions as far as I remember and I am pleased with it. I can email a picture if you want.

Mustard Seed info:
For an Atrium-sized packet of mustard seeds, send a $1.00 bill (no checks)
and a self-addressed, stamped, business-sized envelope.
Occasionally seeds are not available due to source shortages.

Great question Cheryl and thanks for posting it as I know many of us are in the process of doing this as well! We will be making most of our items from felt and using wooden people as well. I have a Montessori Globe from Alison's Montessori that I will use. Thanks for the mustard seed info Andrea, very helpful!!

For the mustard tree photo- could you goggle "mustard tree" and click on images? I can always find pictures that way. Of f the printer they are not as nice as a real photo, but they look pretty good.

Did anyone find a mustard tree photo from googling? I didn't.
Also, those who have access to bulk sections in grocery stores, they usually sell mustard seeds right next to the ground mustard.

Anyone who needs the mustard tree picture, I'll have it posted in on Snapfish soon - I'll post when it's ready (sometime tonight). I actually have two pictures with children standing in front, as well as an up close of the flowers.

The mustard seeds used in the catechesis are the mustard seeds of the Holy Land--much, much smaller than grocery store mustard seeds. Amazingly tiny. They can blow away. The children have to be so careful when they hold them (which is one of the ways the material teaches).

Neat!!! I saw that the presentation said "Jerusalem Mustard Seed"....but, of course, in my never-ending quest to be lazy about everything, I IGNORED the word "Jerusalem"

Teeny tiny black (or dark brown) mustard seeds are sold at some grocery stores in bins (the bins that you scoop what you want to buy into a bag).
Replogle Wonder Globes (4 3/8" diameter) can sometimes be found at Ross for around $4. They can be painted to look like land and water globes.
I made a relief map of Israel a couple of years ago with my children. It is a lot smaller than the one that was used in CGS with my son. I used a wooden tray with handles, purchased on sale from Michaels and model magic. If my memory serves me correctly, I followed Moira's instructions from that point. I did use mod podge (I wish I had done this sooner as it prevented further shrinkage). I posted a photo on my blog for you to see (I did not include the markers/labels in the photo), Israel relief map.

figurines: ideally, find someone who can cut them out of wood for the ones that are 2D, and then paint them!
3D (historical) figures can be made from Sculpey. I know "real" atriums often use this. I enjoyed making mine this way.

I've been trying to do this all "on my own" without actually purchasing Moira's album. I have many of the basic supplies, but the more I read, the more I think I need her album. Is there anyone that does this all on their own without it? Also anyone looking to sell one used (for the 3-6 age group)?
