OK, I've read it a thousand times, but now I'm looking for the Church quotation about parents being the primary educators of their children. Was it the catechism? If so, where? I'm currently looking for the quotation, and need it in Spanish, to boot...

Here's an excerpt from the Catechism of the Catholic Church:

1653
The fruitfulness of conjugal love extends to the fruits of the moral, spiritual, and supernatural life that parents hand on to their children by education. Parents are the principal and first educators of their children.164 In this sense the fundamental task of marriage and family is to be at the service of life.

In looking for the reference, I found this statement of John Paul II to Catholic Educators. My favorite quote was:

"Parents must be acknowledged as the first and foremost educators of their children. In comparison with the educational role of all others, their role is primary; it is also irreplaceable and inalienable."

This is one of the best Papal quotations in support of our right to home educate that I have ever read.

The catechism statement (CC 1653) is actually taken from the Vatican II document Gravissimum educationis(GE 3) which in turn is citing Pius XI's encyclical letter Divini Illius Magistri which is currently being discussed in another forum thread.

And very helpfully the vatican website that has the gravissimum educationis document also has it in Spanish.

Thank you, Mary and Alice. Ironically, I had just printed out "Divini Illius Migistri" and had started reading thru it. I'm looking for thoughts on the family, homeschooling and liberty for a group I'm speaking to who are Catholic, but have very little exposure to homeschooling. Willa's comment on the other thread about free servitude and freedom to educate got the gears going in my head. However, they are very small, rusty gears, so I'm glad to have the official Catechism citing on the "Parents must be acknowledged as the first and foremost educators..." quote (as well as Alice's link to "Divini Illius Magistri").
