I am looking for the names of saints who had problems controlling their tempers and who were able to overcome them. My seven year old son is very mild mannered until he blows up and becomes very loud.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

St. Jerome
St. Augustine
St. Rita's husband and sons had terrible tempers..I think her husband was actually wounded and/or killed b/c of his temper
I will try to think of others...I pray often to St.Patrick..I blame my temper on my Irish heritage. LOL!

I've always thought and St. Paul and St. Peter were pretty fiery. Peter always seemed to be talking before he thought. And Paul had to have a lot of anger to persecute Christians so viciously. Also, the two of them argued a bunch about the whole thing of whether Gentiles had to be circumised to be Christian or not.

Camillus de Lellis was dismissed from his work at the Hospital for the Incurables because he was so quarrelsome. I read a story describing him picking up someone--in anger, of course--to throw him across the room.

Someone can correct me if I have this story wrong, but here's one from the "saint rumor mill"...
I heard that St. Francis de Sales was mistakenly believed to be mild mannered, but at after his death it was discovered that the underside of his death bore deep fingernail marks -- indicating that when he was irritated with people, his solution was to dig his nails in deep to control his temper.
I'll try and look for a source to that story...

Bl. Damien of Molokai was known to be quite fiery in defense of the lepers in Hawaii. Once he contracted leprosy himself, he became much more peaceful and tranquil.
(I don't think the book Bl. Damien of Molokai is suitable for young children.)

St. Josemaria Escriva had a fiery, Spanish temper.

I immediately think of Saintly Solutions to Life's Common Problems, the anger chaper. Never mind why this springs to quickly to mind.  The chaper lists the following saints as examples of saints with strong tempers: Sts. James and John, St. Basil the Great, St. Cyril of Alexandria, St. Augustine, St. Benildus, St. Jerome. St. Francis de Sales, St. Vincent de Paul and St. Francis are said to have learned to control their tempers.

Thank you so much for this post!
I will definitely read and meditate on these saints when I get back (meanwhile I'll be rereading True Devotion on our trip). Planning to go cross-country right after Holy Week was not a very well-thought-out move.
