Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I have a nephew, age 7, who received a trumpet for Christmas and very much wants to learn to play.

First of all, general questions about trumpet playing. Should he be learning music theory, perhaps another instrument first?

And locally in Northern Virgina, anyone have teachers to recommend?

Well, I will share my limited experience. I told my children that they had to have piano before they could move to another instrument. Two of my children took piano for several years, then moved on to flute and violin. They both did exceptionally well because they already knew how to read music and the theory behind it.

My middle ds, who is in public school, started this year with orchestra. He is playing the cello. He has had limited exposure to music--handbells and choir at church. He seems to be doing fairly well, but I do believe that having piano first was a big advantage and really helped the others learn more quickly.

Jenn, both my older daughters play brass instruments. Rachel plays trumpet and cornet, and Hannah plays baritone (similar to euphonium / tuba). Rachel learned piano for some time before starting trumpet, and it was definitely a big help ... she was never going to be a pianist and chugged through her lessons slowly but happily, but the theory she learned meant she took off very quickly with trumpet. Hannah, on the other hand, has not had piano lessons. All she had done musically before starting baritone was a little messing around with the recorder. She had just started to read music, but had not got very far. She is still doing well with the baritone, though hasn't progressed as fast with Rachel ... but then that is probably largely due to age, as Hannah started at 7 and Rachel at 10.

All that is to say ... piano helps, but isn't essential. If he wants to get going straight away on the trumpet, that should not be a problem. He can learn the music theory alongside.
