Here's one of those incidents that most homeschoolers can avoid--clashing with a teacher's ego.
Libby had an assignment for her honors music class. She was to evaluate a line of music in historical context. The teacher hinted that there we some "secret" formula in the music that had to do with the Domo in Florence. He said the class should try to figure it out, but apparently believed that they would not be able to solve the problem. Ha! Libby could not resist. She not only loved the music, but has been to the Cathedral in question. She did the research, figured out the math, and asked an architect to explain a few details of the church.
The next week, the teacher walked into the class only to find Libby discussing her finds with a few class members. The teacher was furious, and thanked her sarcastically for "ruining" his lecture. Really. To top it off, he then asked her to explain it to the whole class. When she was done, he asked her to explain it so everyone could understand it. Since it was a mathematical code, and Libby is a very math-brained kid, I guess she just assumed everyone knew what she was talking about. She explained it again, to everyone's satisfaction. In fact, she did so much research she uncovered a few tidbits that the teacher did not know. Yikes.
When she got home, she was so upset with her day. She felt pretty hurt by the teacher's reaction, and was disinterested in her next assignment, due in a few weeks. Frankly, she moped around a bit this week, and her heart was not in the music. I was nearly ready to drop a note to the dean, when...
She got her paper back yesterday with an A+ on it. She was stunned, but thinks maybe the teacher is just young and not used to teaching yet .

Go Libby! Too bad the teacher couldn't share in her excitement instead of acting spoiled, but at least he was able to grade fairly. What's the next assignment on?

MacBeth -- how proud you must be of Libby! Any teacher worth his/her salt would be thrilled that he/she had sparked a child enough to get them to do so much research ... it does sound like the teacher was pouting when she stole his thunder, but at least he "rewarded" her diligence....
You might want to remind Libby that sometimes teachers make mistakes and have tough days too!

Oh, dear, the teacher's pride got in the way.
Congratulate Libby on a job well done .

WAY TO GO LIBBY! Am I the only one who is curious about this problem and solution???
And Yes, please tell Libby that there will always be people like that in the world (hopefully not many!) and she just can't let them get her down. I am happy to hear that he at least rewarded her work appropriately!!
This is just a minor version of Libby's encounter: When I was in 7th grade we went on a family vacation and I didn't get my math assignment so I just did a bunch of problem sets out of the book while we were gone. When I returned and the math teacher (Ms. Lennhart) allowed us to start on our homework before class was over, I just sat there. She couldn't stand it I guess --she made me wash the board!

Poor Libby, I can't imagine your lovely daughter being anything but poised, engaging and polite. I can't be as charitable as the other ladies here, I see the teacher as a twit. Probably because I know Libby a bit and hate the idea of her being hurt.
Unfortunately there are insecure, prideful people everywhere in every profession and Libby, like everyone else, must get used to these kinds of encounters. I hope she finds her enthusiasm for the subject again and doesn't let this diminish her enjoyment of the class.

The next assignment was an evaluation of a piece written for Mass for 6 voices. It's really quite a nice class in terms of content, but a bit strained in teaching style. Now that the class is on to the "reformation" the teacher is explaining how music improved...I reminded Libby that she is there for the information on the music, and to be introduced to the music, not to fight every battle (there'll be time for that in college and grad school).
Thanks for the nice comments, all. It is a lesson in dealing with all sorts of people (as is every class), and I think that it's going well overall. She is getting score after score (scores of scores? ) to read and evaluate, and that's one of her favorite things to do!
