Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

For what ages is Gilbert and Sullivan's Pirates of Penzance suitable? It'll be presented in a nearby town in the spring and my MIL said it was good and fast paced.   I never knew about it until we watched Leonard Bernstein's Concerts for Young People (the humor one) and he sang part of the "animal, vegetable, mineral" song and we laughed.

Sons will be 9 and 5 when the opera is done here.
Is it okay for both, one, or neither?

Thanks,
Kelly in NC

There is a children's book on the Pirates of Penzance you may be able to find at the library. I would read it to them so they understand the story and then find the music and listen to it with them. They will appreciate the performance better. We have the D'ovly Cart Opera Company version that has dialogue along with the songs.

9 and 5 would be fine, they'll love it and probably will be singing, "I Am a Pirate King" until you can't stand it any longer.

My kids have grown up on G & S.

My preschoolers used to run around outisde, singing and playing "The Pirate King" from The Pirates of Penznce.

I'd introduce young children to G & S firstly by listening to a CD and maybe reading a children's version of the story. Perhaps even watch a DVD before a performance. Then - enjoy!
