Not sure if I should put this here or Fireside--but I consider photography my "art."
I am finally considering going to a digital camera. I am an old fashioned, manual 35 mm film girl and looking for advice on what to look for-megapixels, features, etc.
I am also pretty technologically illiterate so am scared of the learning curve associated with camera, computer, printer, e-mail, etc.
So, my wish list right now includes:
-Manual option-so I can let in more/less light, play with speed, etc.
-timer for those family shots when no one is around to help
-easy interface with computer
-automatic option so I can have others use it 
-no delay--my friend has one that has the most annoying delay when you take the picture, you don't get what you were looking at originally.
-flash?
-fairly tough as I will bring it everywhere 
-large view screen since I am in my 40's and have trouble seeing things.
-option to turn off autofocus and focus manually
What do you like and not like about your cameras? What cool features do you really appreciate?
My dh says I should get a digital SLR. Hmmmmmm!

It seems that with those options, you should consider a Canon Rebel or the Nikon D70. These are SLR digital computers that will do all that you are looking for. As for ease of computer interface, that would be the Rebel. I don't have either of these, but my brother who is a part time pro photographer says the Canon is better. Now, if you already own an SLR and have lenses, then buy the one that you own those lenses for. For example, my brother already had a ton of Nikon lenses so he purchased the Nikon D70. He said he would have bought the Canon if he had started from scratch.
Hope that helps. Also for printing, an Epson Stylus Photo RX700 is a great option. You can print for less than at a store and for less than print film.

We just purchased a Nikon D-50. You can see the first few photos here. Click on the thumbnails and see the pictures larger. The detail in the sunflower is remarkable.He used the Nikon D-50 for the pics in the four most current posts. My son is definitely a "photo artist" and he's utterly thrilled. He's out of the country right now and can't answer specific questions but he'll be back by the end of the month (I think).

I have a Kodak Easyshare DX7590. It is pretty good and VERY easy to use. My kids can use it. Also very easy to upload with the little dock it comes with. One button uploading is great for the tech challenged like me.
HOWEVER
If I were to do it all over I would get whatever Rachel uses. Her pictures are stunning! Check out her blog Wortcunning and you will see what I mean. Fabulous!
Oh, and Elizabeth, those sunflower pics are also gorgeous!

The sunflower pic is awesome--and I enjoyed the soccer photos too!
Rachel, is she out there? What does she use? just curious..
Could I ask what you need to do to get the photos onto your computer? Plug in a cord to the computer and camera, open some program and press some "import" button? How difficult is it?

Thanks for the giggle--though I think I MAY have you beat on the "technical ineptness"--we'll see, only time will tell
Shopping, shopping, shopping--while I SHOULD be sleeping, sleeping, sleeping......these online, always open stores are so cool-now if I only had PeaPod or whatever that grocery shop and deliver service is near me

I'm not a 35mm pro, but I do have an SLR and was very hesitant to buy a digital camera. Dh and I decided to go with the step below an DSLR to give it a whirl. The $$$ was too much at the time. Some day we might do the DSLR, but after I get more comfortable with the capabilities of my camera, and the Digital is more comparable to the SLR and of course, when the cost goes down.
We bought the Sony Cybershot DSC-H2 and absolutely love it. It does have a bit of a delay and it has no shoe for an external flash. I have hard time not using the digital.

Just wanted to throw in a plug for the Canon Digital Rebel. Of course, I started with a rebel, and a telephoto lens - so I continued on with the Canon.
As far as SLR goes the leaders, hands down, are Canon and Nikon. If you have one or the other, I'd second the vote for keeping with the same brand (to reuse those lenses).
One place that really helped me sort throught he mumbo jumbo - I mean research - is epinions.com. There is a camera reviewer who borrows cameras from his friends shop and reviews them - both from a technical side and from a "regular user" side.
Another thing - when it was just me and my Canon Rebel (non-digital version) and I was contemplating the move to a digital, it was my husband who suggested I get the dslr. I fought him on it at first - so expensive, yadada. Now, not a week goes by that he doesn't point out how great he is for pushing me to get the Digital SLR . I have to confess, he's right.

I did all the on-line research also, but what helped the most was to go to a store and handle the different cameras. We chose the digital camera that, for us, had the easiest interface (Kodak EasyShareZ740). I still love the interface. On the whole it's a good camera, but extreme close-ups are not very good.
Wow, Elizabeth's Nikon's sunflower photo is remarkable! And KC, I didn't know I could have still used my old Rebel lenses with a Rebel digital. I never even checked that out. Thanks!

Love, love, love my new Nikon D70. I believe Nikon is coming out with a new SLR this Autumn, so the D70 and D50 may go down in price. I am not computer savvy and am new to the SLR world, but this camera is easy to use, but leaves lots of space for me to learn and grow in to more advanced photography.
