Thanks,
Betsy

I was just wondering this same thing! I bought 2 4-packs of play-dough brand at Wal-mart yesterday, and they were $1.67 each. I've never been happy with the Rose-Art brand, which is the only other brand I've tried. I'm wondering if the Lakeshore dough is any good? I think they've got gluten-free dough for those with allergy issues, too.

I always use this recipe from the Family Fun Cookbook:
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup water
1/2 cup salt
1 tsp veg oil
1/2 tsp cream of tartar
Mix all in pot over medium heat until it holds together, keep mixing or it will stick (I use a Teflon pan) When cool to the touch, knead on floured surface, add food coloring. You can also mix in Kool-Aid mix for an added fragrance. I quadruple the batch.
I also use the cheap bleached flour and buy the cream of tartar thru a food co-op, it makes it much cheaper.
HTH, it's nothing fancy, but I use it frequently and I don't worry about the children if they happen to put it in their mouth. It does not bake if that is what your looking for.

We usually make it, too, though in large quantities I've been happy with the Discount School Supply brand. They also carry gluten-free playdough, if anyone has children with gluten allergies or sensitivities.

This is my favorite play dough recipe - slightly different than what was already posted - has more oil and no cream of tartar because the kool-aid serves that function in this recipe. And you just add the boiling water instead of cooking the whole thing. It's super easy and a lot of fun to watch the color change when you add the boiling water to the white looking dry ingredients.
1 cup flour
1/2 cup of salt
1 package Kool-Aid
3 tablespoons oil
1 cup boiling water
Combine flour, salt, and Kool-Aid. Add oil and boiling water. Mix together and knead until smooth. Let cool. Store in refrigerator.

Are their any natural dyes that anyone uses for the homemade variety for play dough?
Thanks again for those that have already responded!!!!

You could use beet, spinach, and carrot juice for a more natural dough.

My daughter made peanut butter play dough for the little kids today. She decided to get creative and put food coloring in it, it looks disgusting! But they are having a great time with it using my cookie cutters and garlic press and eating their creations. No, this is not good nutrition, just good fun.
1 cup creamy peanut butter
1 cup corn syrup
1 1/4 cups powdered milk
1 1/4 cups powdered sugar
Mix ingredients like dough and eat, er, I mean play.

Ever since Elizabeth put up that fabulous post on the Art Box, I've been eager to try Sand Dough. So here are two recipes I've dug up, and cannot wait to try out!
SAND SCULPTURES
Put 3 cups sand in an old cooking pot.
Add 1 ½ cups of cornstarch to the sand and mix well.
Add 1 ½ cups water to the mixture.
Cook the mixture over low heat, stirring constantly, until it thickens (about 2 minutes); then cool.
Once the mixture is cool, spoon it onto some newsprint.
Make whatever you want; just let it dry naturally and you can keep it forever!
SAND CLAY
1 Cup Sand; 1/2 Cup Cornstarch; 1 tsp. Alum (this is found in spice section of store); 3/4 Cup Hot water; Food coloring (optional)
Mix sand, cornstarch and alum in bowl. Add water, stirring vigorously. Add food coloring if desired. Cook over medium heat until thick. Cool and model. Dry in sun for a few days.
Will keep in an airtight container. Shells will dry into mixture. A fun way to make permanent sand castles for your sandtable, or Pyramids for Egypt as it becomes stone-like when dry. Use an ancient pan for this as the Sand will scratch!

We have used a similar recipe, although we don't use powdered sugar and we use honey instead of corn syrup. It's not "terribly" bad for you...pb is nutritious, and powdered milk is good too, right?

Kool aid dough??
Somewhere, sometime back I remember a playdough made of kool aid--it was very soft and nice, smelled wonderful, and nice bright colors too (tho would it stain?? guess you'd probably want to be careful w/it).
I've always wanted to find the recipe, I even brought some kool aid back from the states in hopes!
Here in Europe a pack of 4 playdough cans goes for 7-8 euros!! So, I need to find a good recipe too!

Here's my go-to site for play dough, clay, weird paper mache, paints, and bubbles.
Kool-Aid Dough is #12 under Doughs, and #8 & #12 under Clays.

Thanks for all of the suggestions! I need to get busy making some play dough for this year!
One more questions....do all of the "toys" work equally as well with purchased vs. homemade play dough. Mainly I am thinking about the machines to make hair (garlic press?).
Thanks,
Betsy

I would think experimentation would be in order, if you made sand or oatmeal dough the garlic press wouldn't work as well. But Shampoo dough sounds like it'll be nicely textured so should work fine. Also wet vs. drier doughs would make a difference too, which can even happen in the same recipe. For instance, we made basic Salt dough the other day and the red was much, much drier than the greens, until we added too much water that is!

We don't have many dough "machines". I let them use pots, pans, cookies cutters, dull knives, rolling pin, and whatever is in the kitchen that can be used safely. They never complain and have a blast playing all afternoon.
My 15 year old made the dough for them the other day because he had such fond memories of playing with the dough himself that he wanted to "pass" the fun on. Happy, grateful tears, of course!

Goodness, I feel a little silly--I swear I read the thread but, I think it was been late at night!
In any case this is just what I was looking for!

Thanks for posting Angie,
Since my original post in 2006, my older children have moved past the play-dough stages! However, I have a new batch of kiddios that are perfect to start making for again!!!! Thanks for the reminder.
BTW, I love the crock pot idea!
