This month's artist of the month is Australia's own Ken Done. August was chosen for our Australian artist because August 8th is the Feast Day for Blessed Mary MacKillop.
She was beatified in 1995 by Pope John Paul II. She is expected to become Australia's first canonized saint.
Ken Done was born on 29 June 1940, in Sydney, Australia. He left school at 14 to enter the National Art School in East Sydney. After 5 years study, he ommenced a highly successful career as an art director and designer in New York, London and Sydney. His first solo exhibition was held in Sydney in 1980. Since then, he has held over 50 one-man shows.
Major projects in a very diverse career include the painting of a BMW Artcar, and the total decorative scheme for the Garden Restaurant at the Powerhouse Museum, in Sydney. you can read more about him on his own website here: Ken Done history.
I have long been attracted to his work, but didn't always know it. You see, my sister-in-law came to visit a couple of years after we were married and saw our comforter. When she said something like "I really like Ken Done too," I didn't know what she was talking about . Turns out he painted the picture on my comforter!
If you have Flash on your computer (most of you probably do, even if you don't know it), his site has 2 great "exhibits" that include the ability to zoom in and hear the artist's actual words via audio. The audio took forever to load on my old-fashioned dial-up but the pictures were pretty quick. When I tried it on high-speed it worked great. I've only listened to one commentary by him, and it was interesting, but he was talking about "if their was a God, he is in all of us". Anyway, you might want to listen first or at least be there to talk to the kiddos about what they hear.
Permanent Collection
and
Current Exhibition
I'll post pictures here soon!

Thanks so much for doing this, Jen. I've been eagerly awaiting your post!
Such beautiful colors! Love the one called "Butterfly Dreams". His works should be fun for the children (and me) to copy.

Fantastic! Thanks for introducing me to a new artist I'd never before encountered. What spectacular use of color! Love the "Sydney Night 1984." Wow!

Hi,
Ken Done is really interesting! Thanks for doing this.
This will be my first artist study with my 6 & 4 year old boys. How do each of you work your artist study? It would be to time consuming to get actual hard copies of his work. So, do you just gather around the computer? Or print them off? Any other suggestions?

I apologize that I can't find figures large enough to make really nice printouts. If anyone can help me out, please do!

I finally have my favorite flower around - Nasturtiums! They really don't seem to be salt tolerant...

Thank you so much for doing this Jen! My computer is still not working right and all that cutting and pasting would have done me in. Hey is there a pun in there somewhere?
Thanks again, you did a great job!!
