Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Does anyone here use an iPad for picture study? Buying books and/or postcards for each artist studied might start to get a bit expensive and if we use the library, we'll only be able to keep the books for 2 weeks. It seems like using an online source might allow us to study more artists.

I do hate the idea of using media at my DD's age though (3 1/2).

We used Art Authority for our picture study last school year. I found it worked well. Generally I would go through the app ahead of time, mark the pictures I wanted to use, then show them to the kids during our picture study session. We could zoom in on parts of the picture and sometimes there would be separate close-up images of sections of a painting, especially if it was a more complicated image.

I'm not sure this situation is ideal, because really I'd like to have a physical version of the painting I could put up somewhere so the children could see it during the week and not just during our picture study session. But given restraints of time and money, it worked out well for us. I plan to continue doing picture study this way in the upcoming school year as well - although now that I (finally!!) have a color printer I am going to experiment with printing a few images for display.

I think that since you're using the iPad as a display device with your child rather than an interactive device there really isn't a media concern... but obviously that's just my 2 cents!

I have used my laptop for looking up works of art together, and a host of other things, forever. But if you're looking for affordable non-media sources for art (which really would be better, especially from the standpoint of being able to live with a work of art over a period of time), what about calendars? It might be worth asking around your family and friends to see what art calendars people might still have lying around from previous years. Even one calendar would give you twelve works of art to work with -- you could change the art out every three weeks, giving you plenty of time to visit and revisit a single picture and notice new things about it.

And surely we're not the only people who tend not to throw out pretty old calendars? :)
