Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I need some help!

I'm thinking of making some ornaments that will be paintable. This might be used for our homeschool Advent retreat.

In the past it was easy to make salt/flour dough ornaments and paint them.

Sculpey requires baking and glazing before painting. The instructions even say more than one coat of glaze, which is time consuming if doing on large scale.

The wheat flour is a problem here, so I'm trying to think of another kind of easily paintable of medium?

Hmm... we have made ornaments with dough made from cinnamon, but I haven't tried painting beyond a few simple details. They smell fantastic, though!

What about white model magic? We've never painted it, though we have used markers on it. It seems like it should take paint, though.

Here is a dough that is paintable:
1 cup cornstarch
2 cups baking soda
1 1/4 cup water

Mix cornstarch and baking soda in a pan. Add water gradually, stirring till smooth. Cook over medium heat until it thickens stirring constantly. Kneed well. Cover with damp cloth or keep in a plastic bag.

I think you will like the smooth consistency of this dough although it is a little more drying on the hands than the traditional dough. It is good for painting, does not crumble and crack as much when drying as salt dough and is a brilliant white color which just begs to be painted!

We made wheat dough ornaments in 1999 and we still hang them on our tree! I love them so much! So nostalgic.

Most of my kids are gluten-free, and I just got turned on to sorghum flour. It resembles wheat dough more than anything else I've seen (but maybe only after I add the xanthan gum?). Maybe I will try to make a new set of ornaments w/ that.

BUT I am waiting until after Thanksgiving and possibly until Advent begins so I won't be able to let you know until then.
