Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Okay, so I'm FINALLY resolved to make sure we are doing formal picture/artist studies a la Charlotte Mason's technique. I have watched the Eve Anderson DVD lesson and ordered a set of prints from Simply Charlotte Mason to make it easy, at least as we are getting our feet wet.

After viewing the videos, it is SO much clearer to me how it is done

But, I know that in the videos I saw of Ambleside, they had the pictures, presumably from the artist they were studying that term, on display.

So, would you have all the pictures on display the entire
term, choosing to *study* them one by one? Or would you only put them on display after they'd been studied.

On the one hand, my own question seems silly to me. It seems that, of course, you couldn't LOSE anything by having the beautiful art on display to become familiar with it. It would be edifying.

And yet, because the picture was presumably one the children had never seen before in the lesson I watched, it makes me think that perhaps that is key? Sort of like not assigning a book for narration that had already been read for leisure.

Any thoughts?

Just a few quick thoughts, Lindsay...

I don't think there is a right/wrong answer here. You're right in that it would be edifying either way. When trying to come up with a system here, I did consider that sometimes an object that is out all the time becomes familiar enough that one almost starts to look past it and I didn't want that to be the case with our art, so I decided to have the art prints displayed for the time period they're being studied so that seeing them for the first time is when they sit down to do formal picture study. I do catch the kids looking at the art after picture study - particularly when someone else here has made an observation about the art that is surprising to them - they enjoy the hunt to see if they *see* the same thing.

I have a place I display pictures of our artist/composer/poet that we're studying for the term because I think having a face to associate with the person the children are reading/learning about helps them associate with the artist. I'm just using a simple display board like this. It works well for us.

In the same place, under the portrait of our artist, I display the art piece we're studying. Some pieces become favorites and they stay out on display or are placed around our home, but other art selections are filed in my file system by artist's name.

Just to clarify, you put the pictures on the board AFTER you've done a picture study with that particular print? You don't have all the pictures you will be studying by the artist out for the entire term? You are gradually adding them?

Yes. The art goes out AFTER we've studied. Again, I don't think that's necessarily the *right* way, it's just the way that has worked out best for us.

I usually leave all the pictures we've studied out on display for the term. I always put art away at the end of the term in preparation for a new artist. I like keeping art out during the term because the children begin to notice connections and similarities in style, color, shading, and composition by viewing several different pieces of art completed by one artist.

This fall, I'd like to come up with a display area in our long hall for our term's art. Still brainstorming that.

So what have you come up with so far? A long hall gives you some nice space. Would some of the "displaying students' art" ideas that have been posted here, Pinterest, etc. work?

You're thinking in the same direction I am, Mary.

It is a really long hallway so it lends itself well to this kind of idea. I've seen a few ideas on Pinterest, I just didn't have time to link.    I need to go look there again and refresh my memory though!

I was thinking of something pretty and functional (you laugh? ).

One idea I had was to use a pretty velvet ribbon and affix the ribbon on either end with some kind of decorative nail/grommet/pretty thingie and then just use clothespins to hang the artwork down the ribbon. If I did this, I could have a few different layers of string hung at different heights on the wall - one for kids artwork, one for our picture study art pieces, etc.

Another idea I had was to get a really long, narrow piece of artist canvas from Michael's and just hang that on the wall and feature the different artwork on the long canvas.

Still thinking on it though!

I really like the pictures I've seen of children's art displayed on a thin, pretty curtain rod with ring clips. This is what I would do if I were putting it in the living spaces (e.g., the hallway). I have the Ikea wire curtain hanger with clips in the boys' toyroom for their art. It is more casual looking than the full fledged rod, but find for the space.

Hmmm...I was thinking of using frames in the dining room when I first posted this, but that wouldn't really work with progressively putting them up. Not that I HAVE to, but I do see the merit in bring the pictures out one at a time...

This is what I did a few years back that worked really well.

::I framed all of my pictures in frames from Ikea that matched.

::I had dh hang one of the popular long wall shelfs on the wall. (This was about 4ish feet long and looks like crown molding with a 6-8in shelf on top)

::I placed each of the pictures on the shelf after we did the picture study.

To me, this worked well because it didn't matter if the picture was horizontal or vertical. I usually get my pictures from AO and they can come either way.
At the end of the trimester I swapped out the set for our new artist and stored the pictures in a portfolio like this

I also know of a few Mom's who have a nice hard bound book and simply glue in each of their selections after they are done. On the opposite side I believe they included a small narration from the child.

Before I read the whole thread, which I don't' have time for right now - will come back - I wanted to note that Sonya Schafer does a good job explaining picture study and display in here SCM All day CM seminar. She uses large coffee table books as well and displays those on an easel. I bought a couple super cheap off amazon and abebooks such as Van Gogh by Milner as well as some Monet adult and child picture books. The Van Gogh book is one example she uses in her talk.

I'll be back after reading all the other lovely advice!

Something like this is what you are describing, right, Lindsay? I do like this.

From Rustchic

Betsy, that sounds like a great visual display. Any you are right it would be good as it wouldn't matter if they were vertical or horizontal as they wouldn't be permanent by shape.

I really like this idea also. But it would seem trickier to work with horizontal and vertical changes since the clips are set for one orientation. But I guess if you had enough different frames (with varying orientation) you could swap them out depending on the orientation of the pictures needed for each study. I just think these are so fun an colorful.

From Shanty Chic

Obviously for works of art, you would probably want a neutral background, not the polka dots, but the frame color is what I really like, such a pop.

I saw this post from a mom that used the SCM prints. I like the idea of adding the pieces after we've studied them and then having them hang for a while.

I really like your idea Betsy of a long shelf to place/rest them on so that it can give the kids easy access to hold and look at closely.

I do like frames so I'm purchasing my frames at the Dollar Tree store so I don't spend to much money on them but still get the nice display look .

I do picture study using pictures from calendars of previous years (I buy them when they go cheap!) Anyway, I laminate them because my kids really like the handle them and they have sticky fingers.

After we are done, we hang the picture on the wall in our kitchen near the table. We leave it up until we need the wallspace for a new artist so we have several artists up at once on different walls around our breakfast nook.
