I was looking at this program recently and I think this would be a good fit for my boys. I may have to wait a few months since our school budget is spent. I am trying to figure out which book to start with. They are in grades 3rd and 6th. My oldest has very little art skill so he could start lower and according to the website older kids could start in the younger books. I guess one of the K-3 books, but not sure which one. Also, has anyone bought the art supplies pack? I would have a hard time finding quality art supplies in our town. Most likely I would use alternatives to the suggested materials and I would actually like to have some quality materials on hand for a change. Any suggestions, comments, or whatever on Artistic Pursuits?

I need to find something for my G-6.5, as this is really her interest right now. (And piano, I saw your other post on that!)

I met the creator of this program and he told me that everyone should start at the very beginning even if they are adults.  There is nothing babyish about Level 1 (K-3). They learn about drawing, painting, etc. There is also picture study included in most lessons. My only complaint about the picture study is that the pictures are too small to really be able to do a true picture study of them. You can probably email the creators since they are very friendly and helpful.

Hi, Cassie-
I have used AP for the past four years. I like the program a lot- started with the preschool book and then went on to the K-3 books. Since the skills build, I think you could start with the first level. I enjoyed doing the projects along with the kids. As an adult I did not find them too simple.
The only thing I didn't like was in the second book of the k-3 series I got tired of doing stamping and roller projects. It felt like there were a lot of them.
I did order the supplies from Dick Blick, and it was well worth the cost.
Much better than running around to different stores and trying to find everything.
This year we are taking a break from AP to try the Home Art studio dvds, only because I am noticing that my ds really likes to have a more visual component to his art lessons. He likes seeing it done- I guess it gives him more of a feel for what he's trying to create.
We will probably continue to use AP off and on. It has been interesting to see which types of lessons the kids prefer.

When I want good art supplies I order from Dick Blick, it's about the cheapest you can get quality anyway.

At first glance this looks wonderful! I will admit to being a curriculum junkie - but I do really need something for my art-starved daughter, and art has never been one of my strengths.

I don't think you need to start with the preschool book with kids of that age. It isn't like the rest of the books in my opinion. Level 1 for K-3 will be really good for you, I think!

I love Artist Pursuits. I think it is very well done and the format and structure are appealing to me. It started here - this family is local to our area and Mrs. Ellis teaches at one of the public school homeschool enrichment programs up north. Anyway, I do highly recommend the books.

Like Melinda said, none of the books are too young/simple and could be used from the beginning but as she mentioned they are more project oriented. I think I would even call them more "crafty" but definitely teach art appreciation of those ancient periods. This thread discusses the K-3 program being more craft/art projects book of art and craft ideas?. If I didn't have K-3 students and was just starting I wouldn't start with those (though might still want to get it for reference if finances allowed it - I know they are spendy). I would consider the 4-6 as good basic art from the beginning for any age and work up.

I get a mix of supplies from various suppliers since we can get them locally. But if you can't Dick Blick is where I would recommend anyway, so the fact that they have it all outlined already to correspond with each book makes it really easy. Dick Blick is high quality and good prices. And you don't have to buy the whole supply set - you can pick and choose from the link. Very easy.

We have only ever used the upper level books and we love them. My kids range from very artistic to disinterested, reluctant artists, and they all do well with these books.
