I am looking for a classical music cd that has an introduction before each piece stating the composer's name and the name of the piece. Does such a thing exist? I thought it would be great to have something like this playing during independent work time and after some time the kids would pick up on who wrote what and what it is called.

I don't know of one Jackie, but if you find one please let us know. It would make it so much easier for the kids to learn who wrote what and the titles of the pieces if they were announced ahead of time. I like to play classical music while we are working on art or drawing but I just put in a cd and let it play, I don't stop to announce each new piece.

When I started getting "into" classical music many, many years ago I wanted the same thing so I could learn the composers and pieces. Honestly, I never really found exactly what you are looking for in a CD.
Now that I listen mainly to classical music, and have for many years, here is what I would recommend.
1. Listen to a great radio station. I recommend The Classical Station, WCPE. They play a wonderful variety of music and always announce the pieces and give back ground on the composers. They have many ways to listen on line. Hopefully one will work for you.
2. The next best thing would be to get a compilation CD of "greatest hits" and listen to that. The pieces will be very popular and you will soon recognize them and hopefully be able to link then with their famous composer. This will provide pegs to learn other works by the composers because often much of their work has a similar sound.
Basically you need to just jump in with both feet and just start listening to classical music! When a person is moved by great classical music they will want to find out the piece or composer. And, in the end, it's not as important if they know the composer or the piece but if they are moved in their heart by the music and can see the hand of God in it's beauty.

While I haven't found a CD that does that there is a podcast (mp3) series at Gardner Museum that provides a short, informative introduction at the beginning of each podcast (you can read the intros at the website)
The Podcasts are under a license that allows copying for private use so you should be able to burn them onto CDs if you wanted to.
The only problem I can see would be deciding what to choose from the hours and hours worth of Podcasts (an individual podcast tends to be around 45 mins and there are over a hundred and twenty to choose from)

Thank you for you help. I'll check these resources out. My 4 older boys all play piano and they enjoy playing pieces that they have heard before and recognize. I'd like them to be able to say, "I'd like to learn... by ..." instead of "I'd like to learn that song that goes da da da da dadadada". I'm just looking for a simple way to do it so that it is followed through with daily. I'd also like them to be able to know which composer or which style they like and what they don't. We've done composer studies over the last few years and while they are familiar with the main composers and major pieces there is much more that they could learn.

Hello Ladies!
I was so excited to see this thread! I was given a gift for the birth of my first child and I received three beautifully organized cd's with the stories and music for a different composer on each cd.
Here is a link to the site where you can choose the artist to study, click on the link which takes you to amazon.com where you are able to purchase the cd. My kids loved learning about Beethoven, Bach and Mozart from the gift we were given. We are expanding our musical library because of this. It helped my son to decide he wanted to play violin too!

I hope this helps!

Laura,
I think I got a sample one of these in the mail years ago. I'm going to go try to find it and check it out. Thanks!
