can anyone reccomend me some child appropriate art books? I bought Sister Wendys story of painting, and it was a little to explanatory in some places, if you know what I mean. I got a good looking book from the library about the Louve, and it went into really deep sexual annalysis of almost every photo
we want some good coffee table books for the children to sit down with and enjoy.

What are the ages of your children?
Are you looking for books of art with explanations? Picture books with explanations?
We love the Mike Venezia Getting to Know the Great Artists Series books and videos.
For the younger crowds, [url=http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fgp%2Fentity%2FLucy-Micklethwait%2FB001H6PVJ6%3Fie%3DUTF8%26ref_%3Dsr%5Ftc%5Fimg%5F2%5F0%26qid%3D1281198801%26sr%3D1-2-ent&tag=familyfoodfor-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957]Lucy Micklethwait[/rul] books.

I have 13, 10, and 5 that would be looking at them. They can be explanatory or just coffeetable photo books. I want to just have them around for informal art appreciation, and start building up a library of them for our home. My children will sit and look at those art books for hours (and I hope it is not just for the nude paintings )

Hi mamalove.
I purchase inexpensive coffee table books containing art from used book stores. I disassemble the books completely, back the art image with cardstock, and laminate. I use these for picture study, but you could just as easily set out a theme of images - maybe several Rembrandt, or different pieces of art containing scenic images, or images following a liturgical theme...or just set out all of your art images. If you're looking to provide art appreciation, set out your art image collection in a basket along with a copy of Signs and Symbols in Christian Art. The kids and I really enjoy this book and find it helpful...and very interesting!
Some people really don't like disassembling books, but not me! And, if I can find a coffee table book for a buck at a used book store with a few lovely images, particularly one with sacred art, I snatch it up! The paper is usually a great glossy quality, and the image quality is high! It's been a great way for me to collect a lot of art over the years!
Hope this gives you another idea anyway!

My favorite 'Coffee Table' art books for children.
For younger children (and older)
Can You Hear It? This is a great art/music book for busy children as I've found that my children look longer at the pictures when they are also listening to the music selections.
The Come look at me series by Gladys Blizzard is also very good. My children spend hours with them when I take them out of our local library.
For older children (and younger)
Catholic Heritage Curricula's Learning to Appreciate Art is a very handsome book when put together (and the process is educational in itself). Also the pocket provided for the art reproductions makes a good place to store small pictures.
Seton's Art Appreciation Set particularly Art Through Faith.

We have collected several of these by Ernest Raboff/Art for Children. They seem very accessible, and yet informative.
