I have most of next year planned out, but I am a little stumped as to what to do about art. We usually do a lot of art, but it has always been haphazard (big surprise there ).
I don't want to do a scripted program, but I'd like to be more organized this coming year and would love to see what others have planned.
I'm looking for a framework, I suppose, that I can work from.
( I probably should just make a list of a dozen or so artists and just do it, but I need fresh ideas.)
Anyone?

I have just started piecing together my picture studies and art to go along with the history and liturgical seasonal things.
So far, I've used my own associations. So, in some cases, I am using the subject of the picture for inspiration, in others, it is the artist or medium.
For instance, during the week we are discussing Creation, I thought we'd look at this awesome virtual reality view of the Sistene Chapel, talk a bit about Michelangelo, and focus specifically on the pieces devoted to the Creation.
Then, I'm hoping to plan the art and look for inspiration regarding related medium or subject matter at some of the blogs recently listed here as well as Mary Ann Kohl's Discovering Great Artists. For example, with Michelangelo, she suggests letting the child try painting while lying on their back with the paper taped to the bottom of a coffee table.
You have so much more experience with the actual art, I can't imagine you'll lack inspiration there, but you could use the plans you already have in place for other subjects to choose the artists and/or pieces instead of starting from scratch and pulling them out of the air.
I haven't done much art at home since I also participate in the summer programs as well as the read aloud programs in the Fall and Spring at our local art museum. The activity they do is usually SO good, the perfect blend of enough prep work for success but so much room for creative expression and ideas. AND no mess (in my house). I have relied on these so much in the past, but this is my first year doing a more serious schedule (first grade), so I'll have to see how things play out, whether I find it easier to continue or to do more at home. Right now we're doing the summer program and its great. I love not having the mess at home. (And it is free with museum admission! So, we just buy a family pass for $65 a year!). I do like that it forces us to go to the museum and study actual paintings.

I would not glorify my thinking with the term "plans" yet, but... since we're going to be doing the later Middle Ages and the Renaissance this year for history, I am hoping to offer the kids art projects/resources keyed into that. When my two oldest were younger, they enjoyed drawing stained glass windows (as in, take a piece of paper and cover it with thick black lines, then color in each section a different color), so I think I will probably show that to my younger boys this year. I also discovered the product Liquid Leading in the Rainbow Resource catalog, which looks interesting for making "stained glass" without real solder, lead, glass, etc.
I've got a big book on stained glass windows I bought off a bargain rack a long while ago, and this Cathedral stained glass coloring booklooks good, too. So... that's my thinking there.
I've got Seton's book Art Through Faith, which we're going to use more as a reference, especially for the Renaissance.
I am sure we will dust off Katie and the Mona Lisa. (looking on amazon, I see there are a whole slew of Katie books that I don't think existed when I was reading them to my oldest two.)
And I am also hoping to do some block printing this year, since we have never tried it before, and I am thinking that this may be interesting in light of a learning about Gutenberg's printing press.
So -- nothing hard and fast, but a little thinking anyway.

Very cool, Theresa! Thanks for sharing! I'm sure I will be consulting your plans for inspiration as I make my own!

Great ideas Theresa. Once again you seemed to have taken something that can morph into a huge project (that wouldn't get done around here) and simplified it into something quite do-able and very thorough.
Hope you don't mind if once again, I tag along on your ideas!

We use Seton Art series as well.
Theresa, I do just make a list of several artists I plan to study- even if its a brief study.
We have used parts of Sr Wendys art dvd. Its quite good, but needs to be viewed by you first. She does at times uses odd art work.

I have a practical question about your plans. Do you need to have a collection of work of each artist you are studying? Or are you printing off the internet? and if so from where?

To introduce each artist, I plan on making a slideshow on my computer of several images from the artist we are studying, and playing it throughout the two weeks we study that artist. I'll be adding new images of new artists as we go along, so the slide show will get ever longer, a little at a time, thus building in review along with the new.
Then for picture study I will print up or pull from a book particular images that I want to focus on, perhaps one or two from each artist. That way she can have them in her hands as she studies and copies them.

I really like the books Art Up Close and Masterpieces Up Close, mostly for the size. They are very large books which are ideal for a picture study, imo. There might be some pictures which are questionable for some (La Primavera comes to mind), but overall, I like it.

Theresa,
Thank-you for sharing your plans and providing a great framework for us!
I am completely clueless when it comes to art and art study. I have no background at all. Even picture study is foreign to me. However, I've been watching the Simply Charlotte Mason Seminar and Sonya Shafer makes it seem doable. But, now I'm searching for some basic materials to make it happen.
I've seen Sister Wendy's books recommended a couple of times and have found that Sister Wendy's Complete Collection on DVD is available at Netflix and currently available for instant play. Has anyone used this? Would this be appropriate for a 5th grader?
Also, Lindsay, thank-you for the recommendation for Masterpieces Up Close. It looks wonderful!
I've also seen several people recommend getting the coffee table art books from the bargain tables at bookstores. Are there certain publishers to look for/stay away from?

Interesting. I wrote plans based on Discovering Great Artists. I'm going through the artists chronologically. I didn't figure in picture study, though, and I like how you worked it in, Theresa. I'll have to rethink what I'm doing to fit that in.
We're starting our art and science semester early, because I figured 18 weeks for the first "set" of artists and because botany is our first semester of science this year. Giotto was a blast!

These are really good, that you have done. I'm working through writing up plans for Drawing With Children. I'm only on week 4.
