Ds will soon be 12 and is getting interested in music besides classical He is very talented in this area, plays piano (is taking lessons from the piano teacher at the local college) and is interested in guitar (but we don't have the spare cash for those lessons right now).
Our church has a pretty intense LifeTeen band and he is getting attracted to that, Christian music and also country. I know there are threads of music to encourage teen's to listen to and all.
My question is a little different-in a way.
What sort of "issues" would be flags and reasons to not listen to specific songs/groups for your teens/preteens.
I would like the music to have a respectful "tone", not talk down about people, be morally right, not infringe on our Catholic beliefs (I am learning the faith with my kids and this one is hard with all the christian music out there), and be a little more than just "noise."
I have always cultivated beautiful things, music, books, artwork, etc. in my household but now am letting go a little and trying to let my ds use his talents for good.
I am thinking if he begs to go to the LifeTeen mass I will let him after he has gone to the traditional mass with us Sunday am. It is a little too much for dh and I and we don't consider it mass. His talent in music could make some impact in the world BUT we want him to respect the church and it's teachings and the sacredness of the mass.
I could see him playing at LifeTeen and really enjoying it.
I guess I am looking for some ideas from parents who have been there and done that. I would like to let go a little with some limits as the world seems to pull so hard at this particular kid.
