Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I want to invest in some quality water colors that a 4 yr old boy and 6 yr old girl can use (and not use up, immediately ). I found Stockmar in both little bottles and also in the cake forms. The cake forms would be much easier for this age group, I think, but I'm not sure that's the best way to go.

Can you advise, please?

ETA: I also need a set of colored pencils for a 12 yr old. I was going to get Lyra but that Timberdoodle set of prismacolors that is on sale is tempting. But I don't want her to be disappointed after using Lyra pencils...Thoughts?

Prismacolors are wonderful colored pencils! Very high quality and usually very very pricey!

The cakes I've used in higher quality (such as Stockmar thought I've not used that particular brand) tend to be very very nice and use a lot less than the liquids - especially at the exploratory ages like your 4 and 6.

We have a tin of cake paint, that DS 5yo can use independently, but we use tube colours for art usually - they're in charge of picking the colour but I squeeze it out dab at a time. We just got the Water colour for the artistically undiscovered book that has cakes and it is apparently very pure colour - we went for tubes because I'd read it was better than the cakes, but apparently not.

I'm leaning toward the cakes. I just think they will paint more often if its something they can do independently. I will feel compelled to keep an eye on them if they have tubes or jar style paints. Is that a cop out?

I was all inspired last year, after reading a lot of blog posts about water colours. I had tubes, and got them out...and it ended up a bit of a fizzer:-( I had to set them up when Puggle was ready to use them (seeing him with toothpaste meant I really didn't want him putting out the paint!)—and he'd always want to use them _just_ when I'd started to cook or something like that... it was a pain. The mixing was also just really hard for him.

This year, I finally managed to look out some of the cake style. It's been _far_ more successful. He can get it all out himself, and he's quite capable of getting his water jar sorted (and one for Bilby, too). So the two of them have been _merrily_ painting:-)

My vote would be for cakes:-) I've been much happier about them using them... I feel as though the set up and clean up are far easier—and as though there's less danger of dramatic spills:-)

We've been using the Prang watercolor cakes. Melissa Wiley had some great posts (and links to others) about art and watercolor supplies. Very practical.

I like Prang paints, too! If you can find a 40-50% off coupon for Michael's, than both Prang AND Prismacolor products are very affordable!:)
