Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My ds and I were listening and jigging to the Chieftains Bells of Dublin today. Now my jigging is pitiful, and I would love to learn some basic Irish step dancing steps to then teach my son for fun. I'm talking BASIC!

There wasn't much that I could find at Amazon, Irish Dancing Made Easy and Jean Butler's Irish Dance Master Class. Looking for both book and video recommendations...something I hope to get at my library!

Jenn,

I have a dd, who loves dance of all kinds, and takes instruction in ballet and tap.

She also loves all things Riverdance...so we got her Jean Butler's Irish Dance Master Class for her birthday. She did like it but it is not for beginner's and she ended up frustrated trying to just watch after the first few dances. It is really just more of a "behind the scenes" kind of video than a really practical how-to...Also, there are some scantily clad dancers... I would not buy it again and dd hasn't looked at it since September (her birthday month)...

Jenn,
My older children did Irish and I must start to get my ds6 and dd4 doing it soon. Their teacher was great, really informal. I would suggest that maybe you could find a teacher and do a few lessons yourself. It makes it all much easier, I used to get up and have a go with the children. It seemed easier for them than me.

My nieces take Irish dance from another Steubenville alum in or near Manassas, Jenn. PM me if you'd like details. She might do some private lessons for you. And I'm pretty sure she does adult classes if you're interested.

I am happy with my oldest daughter's teacher, but she's here in my neck of the woods, so it would be quite a drive for you.

I second Irene's recommendation. Mary Beth and Patrick both took Irish dance for a couple of years from the woman Irene is referencing and it was a great experience

You might also try calling a local chapter of the Ancient Order of Hibernians. That is where my daughters take classes and they also give a moms class which I am told is a lot of fun but too early in the day for me.

They can be a wealth of Irish culture. My local chapter gives free Gaelic classes and has an Irish culture camp for kids for a week every summer. It is great fun.
