If you could have just one set of colored pencils, what would you go with? What's so special about the Lyra pencils?

I wondered that myself, until I went ahead and got some for my kids at Christmas. The boys migrate to these colored pencils over the other ones. I think it's because they color very smoothly and evenly and product really rich colors. Just my observations over the last six months, but they will be the ones we go to from now on.

I can't say about the lyra ones, but we really love the prisma ones for the same reason cindy mentioned.

I have had Lyra, Stockmar, and Prismacolor. The Lyra and Stockmar are the large triangle type and the Prismacolor are the normal size.
Each of these brands are very high quality and I wouldn't hesitate to buy them again. I find that a largish set of 24 last about one school year with three children coloring every day--so the unit cost isn't too bad!

I have Lyra and Prismacolor pencils, but my very favorites are our
Caran d'Ache Pencils. They are so soft and easy to work with, and the colors are rich and creamy. They get the most use of all our colored pencils by far.

We have not tried the Lyra pencils yet, but I'm sure we will eventually. So far we have been happy with our Prismacolors and these are the one Superboy chooses to use most often.
My little one (JBug), however, absolutely adores her Koh-I-Noor woodless colored pencils and will choose them first every time. I have to admit, they are very nice to work with. Smooth, fast lay-down of color, and feel good in the hand.

I was a prismacolor fan until we tried the Lyras last fall. I bought a small set of block crayons and a set of 12 chunky Lyras. My three girls, by far, like them the best. They also have the Koh-I-Noor ones, and use them at times because they have more colors available right now (I can't afford a huge set of Lyras yet).

Have just been ordering art supplies. (Magic Cabin And Dick Blick)
chubby Lyra color pencils for the younger ones
Lyra giant crayons for younger ones
Dick Blick artist grade pencils for older ones (I really wanted the Caran d'Arche but beyond my budget - Prismacolors break too easily for my liking, I got a lot of recommendations for the Dick Blick artist grade)
Lyra skintones for older ones
Derwent watercolor pencils for older ones
This year we are moving to 'family art corner' where we share supplies rather than each child having individual supplies. We can afford better quality this way.
