Donna's thread with the Christmas folk songs album suggestion got me thinking about seasonal music collections again. I love to get suggestions from the members of this board for music - there is so much out there and it's so hard to know what might be good from the overwhelming amount available. I'm looking to add to our collections, but would love more suggestions.

We've had a few threads in the past:
Suggestions for Advent/Christmas music
Favorite Christmas CD you sing to

But I'd love to hear from you all any new finds that are spectacular, unusual, etc.

oh I can't believe that I hadn't chimed in before..

GoFish - Snow (you may have heard "Christmas with a Capital C")
Transiberian Orchestra - especially "Christmas Eve and other stories" we also like "Christmas Attic"

Everything else is so eclectic it's hard to say.. I grew up with Merry Christmas from Lawrence Welk.. my dh found someone who transfered the LPs to CDs last year was the first year in a long time I had those songs available to me again.. I had some on a cassette tape but it was getting pretty worn.

Alabama Christmas is nice
John Denver and the Muppets: A Christmas Together.. get the one with all 13 tracks.. there is a cheapie cd out there with only 10 tracks.

I second Straight No Chaser.

And I've always loved Mannheim Steamroller, especially their rendition of Silent Night.

I grew up with Andy Williams and Perry Como and am nostalgic. I also like Burl Ives and Bing a lot.

The best for singing along is Mitch Miller Sing-a-long Christmas. It is fun and what dh grew up with.

I also like Amy Grant's Christmas albums.

One of our favorites that is different (I like the "mystery") is Chanticleer's Christmas album. They are an a cappella group that is more Classical than Straight No chaser (which looks fun!).

My husband and I are very particular about Christmas music--we really love the classics. Last year we went about making our own "Ultimate Christmas CD": we listened to hundreds of different versions, chose our absolute favorite for each song, and then downloaded mp3s and burned CD's for ourselves. (I'm surprised we were actually able to agree on all of them! Thank goodness our taste in music is pretty similar.) Bing is featured very heavily.    Andy Williams and the Andrews Sisters are other favorites here as well.

L'Angelus (Cajun band, all siblings, Catholic and homeschooled!) just released a Christmas CD. I love it.

I really enjoy Bing Crosby, and a set of 3 cd's from Costco with songs from the 50's. I always enjoy the Von Trapps - they have Christmas and Advent. Another one I enjoy is Hark Ye Shepherds, with lots of good ones too!

I want to buy this CD. I've heard their older tape and really enjoyed it. That was recorded years ago before my brothers lived at the abbey; this one includes my brother.

Love Andy Williams and Perry Como. I can't say there are many newer versions of Christmas songs that I've enjoyed. Nostalgia plays a huge part in my musical taste, I see.

Rachel, I have the cd and love it. I included it here. I read this raving review and had to get it. The voices are crystal clear and it's just so beautiful!

I have 2 suggestions:

1. Mahalia Jackson Silent Night, Holy Night. Absolutely beautiful and moving. My kids love, love, love this CD.

2. Chant: Music For the Soul (Holiday Edition). Beautiful. This CD was actually recommended in the newspaper published by our local Archdiocese.

I love hearing everyone's suggestions.

My parents had a good collection of Christmas music when I grew up, so I like the older music too, especially Bing Crosby, Perry Como and Nat King Cole. My dad loved Fred Waring and Ray Coniff Christmas albums and I love them for nostalgia's sake.

About 10 years ago I discovered the Time-Life Treasury of Christmas. There are 4 CD's in all and a great mix of old and new. This is one of my favorites.

If you are looking for religious Christmas music, the Cambridge Singers are wonderful. This beautiful choir has several CD's: Christmas Day in the Morning, Christmas Star, Christmas Night and Christmas with the Cambrigde Singers. I do not know how to do links to things at Amazon, otherwise I would.

Hearing all of your suggestions is giving me ideas for next year!

I appreciate everyone's suggestions. We still haven't made a ny purchases (well I should say I haven't but my dd did download Straight No Chaser - the kid's especially love it! Thanks) but have gotten several from the library to try out. It's been fun.
