Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi Families,

When I was 8, we lived in Christiansted, St. Croix, for a year. I fell in love with all the bright colors - the fabrics, the underwater sea life (AWESOME) and the steel drum bands that we would hear.

I've tried at my library to find some steel drum band music, but I must say, their selection is limited.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

Also, what is the difference between steel drum band music and calypso?

Thanks for your help and recommendations.

Maria,
I'm no expert on either of these but I do have a couple sites for places to find good traditional international music. As far as difference between steel drum band and calypso, is steel or pan drum is just the instrument while calypso is the style of music? They use steel (or pan) drums in a variety of Caribbean music styles from calypso to reggae and soca.

Putamayo has a very good collection of world music - we have some of the Latin selections. I checked their Caribbean section and there are 10 CDs I think. Nice thing is you can listen to clips to see if any of it is what you are looking for.

But my favorite site for traditional music of the world is Smithsonian Folkways. If you search "calypso" or "caribbean" you get many pages of results - they obviously carry a large selection of that region. I found a couple that specifically said steel drum in the titles and hopefully are what you are looking for. They also have music clips so you can listen. I liked what I heard. It is fun music!

"Steel Band in San Juan"
"The Bomboushay Steel Band"
"Champion Steel Bands of Trinidad"
