We are thinking of getting a piano and was wondering what people thought of a digital piano versus a real piano. We move around a lot so I was thinking that the digital might be worthwhile since we don't have to worry about tuning. The digitals I was looking at were had all 88 keys and were fully weighted so they felt like pianos. Appreciate it if you have good experience with certain models. Thanks!

While there is nothing like the feel of a real piano, if you need space and portability, an electric is fine...even the kids' theory teacher, a NYC apartment dweller, composer and PhD. candidate at Juilliard uses one for the sake of space and portability...but listen before you buy, and be prepared to spend $$ to get a good one.
BTW, the theory teacher mentioned above is from Chicago and has not taken his White Sox hat off all summer . Is this the year??

I had use of a digital piano before. I don't remember the brand. I used it for a high school production of "Fiddler on the Roof." It was a full sized keyboard. The keys were weighted and had the feel of a piano. If I remember, it also responded to my touch to play louder or softer. It was better than some of those old pianos that can never hold a tune...which was all this school had. I'm very picky about pianos, and this was nice and acceptable. Like MacBeth said, try before buying.

we've been happy with our Yamaha Clavinova. we bought a used one from a fellow parishioner a few years ago.
tho i'll be the first to agree that it is "not the same" as playing a real piano, we haven't seen the piano tuner ONCE since we bought it.

Our neighbors (and good friends) deliberated over buying a digital vs. "real" piano, for all the reasons you stated, plus for space. They bought a digital and were happy with it, too. That being said, they STILL ended up buying a "real" piano in the end. Until that time, they would frequently come over to borrow our piano for recitals for grandparents and other events, stating that it really wasn't the same.
Oddly enough, they are from Chicago as well, though they have never worn a White Sox hat at all, to my knowledge, so it definitely doesn't have to do with the hat

Hmmmm... seems like it's a matter of how picky I am with how much do I want my digi to feel like a real piano...
White Sox rule! They have to win... just for the sake of my family firmly planted in Chicago! We just might have riots in the Englert household if it doesn't happen.

i hope the riots don't get too bad after the 'stros turn their first WS appearance into their first WS victory.
(assuming the 'stros take care of business with the cards first )
