Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Ok, here I go again with another question. Anyone have a recommendation for a good art (actually doing art) program for a highschooler with no real background other than her own messing around. Thanks.

Getting it locally isn't an option though I know there are classes of sorts through the art museum ( these are all basically designed for young children and very expensive and involve regular transportation ). I was hoping for some sort of DVD that would have a visible and audio component to show technique. I don't want to have to do correction of error type stuff - ie if it is a Protestant program that weaves theology and art, I probably wouldn't like it. If it is a Protestant program that has a general appreciation and wonder of God's creation and tries to recreate some sense of that in art, (ie what we have in common) that is fine.

Has anyone used the Seton DVDs in art?

What about the How Great Thou Art?

I am really in over my head as I know nothing about this and we are trying to do a bit more in filling in neglected areas. Two of my youngers have shown some interest using Montessori type things (art trays and books I happened to have - CHC, Seton and a few others) so it would be great if something covered the whole gamut of ages, but I need to make sure that what I use would also suffice for a high school fine arts credit.

The Gluck Method DVD's look very good and the adult ones would be appropriate for a high schooler.
Gluck method

I have not used them, but I am very impressed with the samples. If we had money...!

How Great thou art is really for little kids.

We used Atelier and I've been happy with it. I used it for my lower-grade boys, but I know they have more advanced levels as well.

I assume all levels are similar -- there's a teacher's guide and dvds. The dvd is the art class, led by a teacher , but there are also students as part of the dvd so you can see the wide range of interpretation. I thought that was great because my oldest can be a bit of a perfectionist so it was good for him to see that everyone's looked different.

For the lower grades, the supplies were minimal -- paper, markers, paints and some collage materials.

It seems pricey, but local art classes for an entire year would cost much more in our area. The boys are taking a one week cartooning class this summer that is $80/student, so I think the program is actually a great value.

We talked about the Atelier program tonight at our homeschool meeting. Everyone who has used it loved it and there is a bigger interest among other moms for next year as well.

I've been looking around at art programs too - I recently found this- hard to tell from a website but I thought I would pass it along.

I used How Great Thou Art this year with my 8th grader and she loved it. I bought the DVD's, too. We'll be continuing on with their program next year in 9th. To see if it might be what you're looking for, they have sample pages on their website. Go to the "12 and older" section. I think they have two programs geared for the older kids. The dd who used this program has no real natural artistic ability or background and I've been amazed at what she's produced this year.
