Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Horowitz may have composed a bit, but he is primarily known as a world famous and extraordinary Russian pianist.

A while ago I got all inspired by Mary Reed Newland's "Year and our Children" chapter on Halloween and put together a month long October unit study based on spine-tingling classical pieces rather than composers, per se. We started with...

Week I Bach: Toccatta and Fugue in D Minor. Listened to it every day. Watched the "Fantasia" segment on that. Read books about Bach. Watched "20000 Leagues under the Sea" for the section where Capt. Nemo plays that piece. Listened to the piece even more. Ate Thuringian food.

Week II: Edward Grieg's "Hall of the Mountain King". Learned about Norway and its folktales. Learned about Grieg. Put silly words to the piece and played it over and over until the children memorized it. Acted out the piece (warning-do not attempt before bedtime--it gets them really riled up!). Listened to the Beethoven's Wig segment on the piece. Ate Norwegian food.

Week III: "Danse Macabre" by Saint Saens. Listened to the piece over and over. Made silly songs to go with the tune. Learned about Saint Saens. Learned about the origin of the "danse macabre" (plague years). Did a little study on France. Ate French food.

Week IV: "Night on Bald Mountain" by Rimskey Korsakov. Music familiarization. Watched segment in "Fantasia" (tho it's a little scary for little people"). Learned about Rismky Korsakov and Mussorgsky. Learned a little about Russia. Drank Russian Tea. Ate Russian food.

Another composer who would fit into this theme of spine-tingling classical music would be Paul Dukas and his Sorcerer's Apprentice (section on Fantasia). Also Prokofiev's "Romeo and Juliet", the section at the ball in the beginning. Also the ballet, Giselle, would be appropriate---a little creepy, but good conquers all in the end.

I always tend to get bogged down in unit-studies that just go on and on. This short and sweet method can be an easy alternative. Also, be sure and read what Mary Reed Newland wrote about listening to "danse macabre" in her book!

Kelly,

I remember last year when you posted these ideas on the CCM loop and I LOVED THEM!!! Thanks for reposting!

Do you have any websites for the recipes? I can look them up but if you have recommendations, that would be great!

What is your background? Were you a music major?

God Bless,

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Maria. Wish I could direct you to some one-stop-shopping resource for recipes, but I usually just cruise thru my cookbooks to find something ethnic and easy. Seems like I use the Evelyn Birge Vitz cookbook, "A Continual Feast", quite a bit. She has lots of ethnic recipes and the church history behind them, to boot (so you get social studies, geography, music AND religion at the same time...)

No, I'm not a music major, but my father was a professional violinist, then dean of the university music school, so I spent a LOT of time attending musical events and hearing classical music at home. Just proves that the Charlotte Mason approach of surrounding one with beautiful music can pay off down the road!
