My son is eager to learn all the states right now. (I bought the book "Scrambled States of America" at a used book sale and he loves it.) After singing "Oklahoma" to him, he wanted to know if I knew any other songs that have state names in them.
Now, I knew a few, and I know there are Official State Songs but has anyone seen a list or willing to play along and list some songs for me? I'm thinking of mostly oldie folk songs.
And I'd love songs ABOUT states, too. Like "O My Darling Clementine" about the '49 Gold Rush.
A few I came up with:
Carry Me Back to Ole Virginny
O Susanna (Alabama and Louisiana)
Since we have family in these states, ds especially wants California, Pennsylvania, Nebraska, and Florida.

Here is the original Florida song. Right now it's "The Old Folks are Home", but the legislature is trying to change it. The original song was written in 1894 and was originally adopted in FL in 1913. It's sung to the tune of "Maryland, my Maryland". There are proponent who want to bring the song back as the state song.

Jenn, there is a Geography Songs cd--I can't remember who puts it out, but I know someone here will. Mine is out the car. Anyway, it puts all the states to a catchy tune and grouped by eastern, western, northern, southern and middle. Then there are songs grouped the same way that have states and capitals. More catchy songs for the continents and oceans, and there are a bunch of songs for other countries/continents. I'll try to remember to check the provider the next time I go out to the car. It has sure helped me !

I have that CD, but I left it in the states with a friend of mine. I will try to find out the name of it and who to order it from. It was really a great aid in learning capital and all. I can still remember the tune ...

Jenn
Matt made a States Book this year (to join in with his older siblings doing Trail Guide) - we used
- States song CD
- Melissa and Doug States puzzle - big floor
- there is a cool website with states and capitals etc games ( I need to go through my bookmarks)
- he loves the Scrambled States of America dvd (it does have the word "stupid" in which he never fails to point out!!)
- Scrambled States of America board game - we "engineered" it so that he got some chance at getting some right
- states Maps for coloring - we printed off Trail Guide - but you can get them off Enchanted Learning
- States Sticker book

I immediately thought of Jersey Girl . But I am thinking this not what you had in mind!
It's not a very flattering song though - takes me back to my more wild days.
And I was surprised to find that there are other singers besides Bruce Springsteen that sang it.
Still in Jersey - still loving the Shore - but so very different (thank Goodness!)

We collect this kind of song too! Once we met a new priest, and he was a singing priest, and tried to start a conversation by asking him if he knew a song about Iowa. He stared at us coldly and said, "No." and that was it. Later, I remembered:
The Music Man--"Iowa Stubborn"
Also, in South Pacific there is a song that mentions Kansas.
Midnight Train to Georgia

Here is what comes to mind:
1) an old country song called Meet Me in Montana
2) it's not a nice song but there is Anybody Goin to San Antone (or Phoenix, Arizona)?
3)On, Wisconsin!
4)Blue Moon of Kentucky
The song On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe has quite a few!
Thought you might find this link interesting.

I think this is the cd that Molly and Carole are referring to:
States and Capitals Songs from Audio Memory.
Our children like the Animaniacs song on youtube.
Blessings,
