Anybody have a favorite brand? I would like some that also include a variety of flesh tones so that when the children are coloring in books and drawing people they can be realistic.

Prismacolor! They are more expensive but great quality. You can get them for less at Timberdoodle and Rainbow Resource. The link here is to the Timberdoodle site as it looks like right now they are offering a big discount. And it actually looks like there are several internet sites that sell them at up to 40% discounts. Another good option is using the 40% or 50% off coupons from Michael's Craft Store to get a set there. You can buy them individually at art supply stores (or on-line) - they have hundreds of colors. Then you could get all the different flesh tones you want.

We have the 120 piece set and love it. It retails for $150 but we got it through a Timberdoodle special several years for about $60.

Here is a second vote for Prismacolor! They are by far the best. The only warning I would give is that they don't take well to being dropped onto a hard floor...the lead/carbon??? will shatter. These are pencils to covet and take out for special occasions to be gently put away afterwards!!
Good idea about the coupons from Michael's Mary!

We love prismacolors too. A word of caution, DO NOT put them in your electric pencil sharpener--the leads are too soft and the electric sharpener just eats them up and your brand new pencil will be a stub before you know it!! Use a good metal sharpener for art pencils...and the prismas will last for a LONG time. Even if they are used daily like they are at my house!

Timberdoodle's 72 piece set just went out of stock
Probably due to us here at Real Learning and the great link by Mary M!

Thank you so much for the info about Prismacolor. I was laughing at the blurb on the Timerdoodle site. How they discontinued the 72 piece set because of the artwork on the package. When I read the first post I checked out Prismacolor on Ebay and I saw the picture of the metal tims they come it with these new-agey naked ladies on them. I was a little surprised at the recommendation because my first thought was that I would have to ditch that tin.

The Timeberdoodle site explains what happened and carries the old box which does not feature nudity.

Honestly, naked people on pencil boxes. What next?

Yeah - I don't know when they went to the new design tins. We have all the older stuff. It's really too bad. Don't you wish there were more retailers like Timberdoodle who would refuse to carry their product in those tins. Maybe they would get the message.

You might want to check Cheap Joe's Art Stuff -- I've never ordered from them but their catalog (and prices) are fantastic. Also, they do sell the Prismacolor Pencils individually -- which is great as my 6 yos LOVES red!

Hope this helps!

Also try Dick Blick. Their prices seem even better than Cheap Joe's!

Yeah, I like Prismacolor, too, but for my nature notebook, I love Albrecht Durer Watercolor Pencils and the book, Watercolor Pencil Magic, for help in mastering the technique (I have a long way to go, but the book is a big help!!).

Pencils for me are much better than brushes, as I really destroy them with clumsy attempts at painting .

For the younger kids, I found Crayola's
Write Start Pencils to be way better than crayons.

I would love to really learn watercolor. This book looks good and I do like the watercolor pencils. Thanks for the recommendation.

I went to Michael's this morning. I did not have a coupon but I found a pretty good deal. It was the tim of 48 plus a bonus pack of 12 PrismaColors at 25% off. Total $44.00. If you live near a Michael's you should check it out.

Glad you found a good deal, Mary Ellen. Hope you like them.

For anyone interested there is a Michael's coupon in today's (Sunday) newspaper. It's a 50% off and it's good all week. (The 50% usually are only one or two days). I'm a big Michael's coupon shopper. I've been known to rummage through the neighbors' recycle bins on trash day to get extra coupons for all the kids and it's a recycle week this week. Yeah.

I'm with you, MacBeth.    My painting gets a bit messy as well.

I went to Michael's today with a 60% coupon in hand to get my Prismacolor pencils, but they were on sale for 30% off and I couldn't apply to coupon to sale items. So I'll keep trying for "the deal."

So sad - yet it is best to wait to get the best deal. Just a side note - JoAnn's will let you use their coupons even if the item is on sale and just takes the % off the original (not sale) price.

I was going to thank you for posting this, MacBeth, but as I went back to the thread, I just realized I got the wrong product! I bought the Twistable Crayons for my 2 yo, thinking that's what you recommended. I'll have to try the Write Start, but as an aside, the Twistables have been wonderful and have saved Mommy from a few woes. No more broken crayons scattered all over the floor, and ds really enjoys them.

Do you have the thick lead prismacolors?
What's the difference between the regular prismacolor pencils and the scholar line? The scholar pencils are almost 1/2 the price.

I think this would be great for my 7 y/o, but so many choices are confusing He's not an artist, just a kid who loves to draw. I think he needs an upgrade from his crayola pencils.

Thanks!

Noreen,
Can't help with the prismacolor question (but I'd love to hear the answer to that question). But I wanted to say that my 7yo loved going from crayons/markers to oil pastels. They can be blended together and their color on the paper is quite rich and bold. Both my kids were hooked. Buy a small set perhaps and see how yours enjoy them first. I'm getting my kids a bigger set for Christmas I think.
