I haven't had much luck with my 31/2 year old liking water colors. I don't think they are "precise" enough for his taste. Granted, I just have a Prang set of the kind in a fixed tray, but they are pretty nice, but he just doesn't like those as much as the crayola tempera paints, which I don't think are of as good a quality as the Prang even.

I am not happy with the color of the washable crayola paints and would like to get some nicer quality alternatives. I'm also interested in the powdered bulk variety because I think he would use a lot if I was able to give him more access.

In Don't Move the Muffin Tins, she speaks of buying 2nd grade powdered tempera paints in bulk as an affordable paint. In Preschool Art, Mary Kohl references using powdered vegetable food colorings mixed with starch and water as some of the nicest paint she's ever used with children.

Both of these options reference school supply companies in general as sources.

But, it seems there are a lot of junky sites to navigate if just typing in "School supplies" and I wonder if anyone has nice, reliable sources they've already found?

Mercurius seems to only have the water colors. Are we doing the water colors wrong? *Should* he like them better.

I'm afraid he's quite German in his heritage--perhaps its the engineer in him that shuns the water color? (Though, I realize Steiner was German) Or perhaps I'm not offering them the correct way? He's been coloring solidly in the lines since he was 2 1/2--which seems more like a precision thing rather than artistic. Often he is very creative in color choices, but other times, he like to color pictures all one color (without any white spaces).

I hesitate to spend the money on the more expensive water colors if he chooses opaque methods over the medium grade water colors I already have...

ETA--he consistently chooses our spectra color pencils over the beeswax crayons. They are too "fat" to him and don't have enough of a point...

Did you try Discount School Supply? I'm pretty sure they carry Bev Bos and MaryAnn Kohl stuff, or similar. They certainly have powdered tempera (which makes a horrible mess if the powder spills, and the stuff does stain, especially the yellows and reds. And if you put in too much water, it's no good, it'll just run everywhere--so less is more! I've also put in a few drops of Joy or Dawn into the paint--seems to help with he cleanup.)
