Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We are studying Mozart this semester and I remember seeing this movie back when it came out in the 80's. I'm wondering if any of you have used it or watched it recently enough to tell me if I should let my 12 yo ds watch it? I remember some scenes of crude humor but am not sure exactly what, or what else. I know historical people didn't always lead exemplary lives, and don't want to pretend they did, but OTOH, my ds still finds "potty humor" pretty funny and I don't want to encourage that, yk?

Hi, Karen.....

I remember borrowing it from the library for my kids, when they were younger than 12....and being disappointedit was not something they couold watch. Mine are now 14 and 16, and I still will not let them see it......though I am planning to re-watch it soon.....to see if they can. The thing I remember the most about it......was how they made Mozart out to be a very whiny, fussy, self-centered man......and, even if it is true.......which I am not sure about.....I have never read much stating he was.....I could not stand his character much...and would not want any impressionable or young kids to even see adults acting like brats.......kwim???

so, preview it yourself first...do not just let him watch. I also vaguely recall sexual innuendos....just not sure to what extent...and perhaps some ample bosoms

finally able to get through to the board, after a week of trying...........

Karen:

Amadeus portrays Mozart, not only as a whiny prima donna (as Chari mentioned), but also as a very immature and oversexed prodigy....some of the scenes are a bit risque or so loaded with innuendo it would be hard to miss.....

Does this help?

I agree with the previous posts. Mozart is seen as a
not only as a over-sexed prodigy ( right off at the very begining of the movie!), but, highly pressured by
Father Mozart, and major depressed and a nerous wreak
by the end of the movie.....sad
You might try the Magic Flute tape as a better choice.
It is a story set to the music of Mozart, and since it is a tape, the children must use their imaginations to
"see" the story going on.
Hope that helps.

My kids love the Mozart's Magic Flute -- to the point that my dh bans the tape from the car when he's driving with us!

This movely is historically incorrect.

If you get the "extended version" which I think is what is now on DVD it has even more inappropriate innuendos. I would not recommend it for anyone but adults.

Thanks for all the comments; it's confirmed what I suspected.
In what ways would you, Sarah, call it incorrect historically? I don't doubt the s*xual stuff was exaggerated for the movie, but from what I've read in various places, the general feeling of him being a prima donna, and childish, seems correct.
I've reserved Venezia's book at the library but haven't read it yet. I'd like something a bit meatier, also.

Opal Wheeler's book, "Mozart, Boy Wonder" is great. I loved and read it as a child, and all my children have enjoyed it, too. Ignore the kiddie-looking large print-font---it IS a kid's book, but a very worthy one. Also, "Letters to Horseface" by Monjo is an entertaining, chronicling Mozart's travels as a 14 year old boy, by way of letters to his well-loved sister, Nannerl (nicknamed, "Horseface").

PS My aunt, who was a professional violinist, and the gentlest of souls, went absolutely apoplectic over the "Amadeus" movie, for all of the above-mentioned reasons!
