Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Do your kids draw on chalkboards?

I have a chalkboard that is 18 x 24 inches and the kids don't seem that interested in it. Then I found out that there is other chalk than what you buy at Target.

Does this make a difference?

Then, I read this
Chalk Pictures yesterday and wondered about the better quality chalk again.

So, any feedback? Chalk recommendations? Ideas?

Ours have used them since about age 2. I believe this is due to the fact that we hung 2 medium sized boards about 8 inches off the floor in the kitchen and they (the twins)would play there while I worked. Everywhere we move, we hang a black board in the kitchen, and someone is alway writing or drawing on it. We also use them to play games on. I think they have learned a lot from those kitchen sessions over the years. BTW, we use regular, old white chalk and hung a small key basket under the boards to keep the chalk and eraser handy. HTH

I have always fought shy of blackboards and chalk in case anyone holds the chalk too low and their fingernails hit the board .

I know I should really grit my teeth and take the risk ...

We've used them very occassionally, but it is supposed to be a great way to introduce writing - on a big board so they can write as large as they want without a lot of hand tension. We had to do some therapy with a chalk board (something like insets on a chalkboard, making sweeping shapes, very large). My dc, however, do not like chalk and the way it feels or sounds on the board. I don't like the mess that the chalk dust leaves. We tend to gravitate to white boards - but only for demonstration purposes, wouldn't dare leave the dry erase marker pens out. We get very large white boards from companies discarding old ones.

My 2nd grade teacher was allergic to chalk dust and we gave her a chalk holder/pen but it still must have been pretty miserable in those days to teach elementary and be allergic to chalk.

I found a really neat Blackboard Sketching book online awhile back, very inspiring if you have a blackboard and chalk! I had no idea such images were possible.

Oh good. I was going to dig up that thread and post it here.

There are some older books for teaching catechism I think called "Chalk Talks". Really neat ideas of incorporating blackboard for teaching religion.
