Dear Ladies,

I am coming to you as you are the most resourceful group of ladies I know!

By a miracle a small school here has annonymously recieved a brand new Yamaha piano. The problem is that it just arrived at the doorstep and Eritrea is not the sort of country with a local Yamaha dealer to contact!

I tried the piano - it sounds very muffled and the keys don't have the regular action. I think it is blocked for the transport. You can still play it but it is if you had the soft pedal on.

I hope it is this and with a little twist of a lever (or something) it will get into gear! I do hope that it did not get damaged in the transport.

Can anyone enlighten us please?

With much gratitude for your time reading this!

Hi,
Have you tried contacting the Yamaha company to ask them about it? Perhaps they can help you via the internet.
God bless,
Mary

Does it have a practice bar on it? That too would give a muffled sound.

Dh knows pianos inside and out - was a full-time tech as a young man. Let me ask him and I'll get back with you.

I have a Yamaha which has 3 pedals. The middle one kicks over for the practice bar that Tami mentioned. It could be that. Also, open the top and take a look inside. If it doesn't have a practice bar, they may have just put some sort of protection inside where the hammers hit the strings.

HTH,
Valerie

Hi ladies,
Thanks for your response.

I have left a message with the world wide Yamaha site - we don't know who sent it or where it came from - that is the problem. I am not sure how long it will take to get an answer. I am so worried this piano got damaged.

I will go to visit the piano to have another look to see if I missed anything. I couldn't see anything the first time round.

It is a silent piano series - the middle pedal of the 3 puts it onto the electronic mode where you listen with headphones. The pedal to the left has become the soft/pratice pedal and the pedal to the right is the sostenuto one. When you put the soft (is that the equivlaent of practice?) one on, with some notes you can barely hear it. I have played a lot of these painos in the past so I am sure it is not normal.

It actually sounds like it is continually with the practice pedal on and then when you really put it on it is nearly without sound.

THe other thing that is worrying is that the keys are out of line when you get down and look horizontally at the keys. Some are higher and some are lower that the majority.

Oh, Tami - I hope your dh will have an easy answer!

Blessings to you all.

Dh wants to know is it acoustic, or electric/digital?

It is acoustic like a regular acoustic piano but the only difference is that there is a "silent" system that has no effect on the regular piano except when you put the middle pedal down it goes electric/digital and there is no sound made except through the head phones.

The problem I think is nothing to do with the electrical side - it seems clear that it is physically the hammers and the strings and dampening.

Even if your piano is out of tune, when you put it on the electrical you hear a grand paino tone perfectly in tune (and you can even pitch it up or down).

But because it is touch sensitive, it is also affected by this faulty hammer/string contact. Some notes you can barely hear whilst others are better.

It really is like you have the practice pedal down but it is worse because it is not even. Some notes vibrate even less that others. One or two at the extreme ends are bright.

Does any of this make sense????

Thank you so much! Blessings

Dh just read your post. He says you *really* need a piano tech to look at it. It's the only way to find out what is wrong.

It could be a host of different things, but the only way to know is to investigate the action and see what's holding it up. The action could be locked up for transport, perhaps held down by screws or clamps, or even tied. If it's damaged, then it could be any # of problems, i.e, the action is out of the cradle, etc.

Only a physical inspection will tell you...I hope you can get someone in to look at it!

We're trying! Prayers would be welcome that we find the right person!
Thank you. At least some of the reasons you give may be easily remedied.... let's hope it is one of these.

God bless

In case any of you ladies look back to see what happened with the piano story - Yamaha did get in contact with following our email shout for help. I never saw such professional service at such a distance: all from Japan head office! They found someone to help and sent all instructions etc. The piano is now functioning beautifully. Result - I don't feel as if we are so cut off here in Eritrea any more!
Blessings,

Hello Chicken Lady!
The piano must have had a big bang during transport(maybe the piano slipped and got a bang on a corner). I am sure ths would never happen in the US but here there could have been just 2 people trying to load and unload a 250 kg piano into a truck....

I am not sure of the technical terms of the parts of the piano but a whole section was shifted so things were not aligned. As soon as this moved back in place, the keys played with a wonderful bright and "full" tone.

Now it can be enjoyed!
