Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm on the search for some good fingerpaints. Did you see Maryan's pictures of her boys fingerpainting? I had just bought some paints and paper and was doing it this morning and found her post.

Now, this is the second batch of fingerpaints I've bought and I hate them. Part of my memory of fingerpaints was the smell, texture, and colors -- rich, vibrant, opaque colors. RoseArt and Melissa and Doug are the brands I've tried and the smell is almost nothing, and the paints are rubbery and almost clear. What's going on? They don't work well!

I tried going with the cheaper...I could buy huge tubs from Michael's or A.C. Moore but they were expensive. But if they are like the "old fashioned kind" please let me know and I'll get them.

GRRRR...please help me!

In addition to the paint issue I have struggled finding good paper. I order some from a cataloge and it was very, very thin. Has any one found a good source for paper as well?

Jenn, I remember Mom making finger paints and letting us paint on brown paper bags. Nothing fancy but a step up from squirting Dad's shaving cream on the table and letting us smush it around! Why does shaving cream clean desks and table tops so very well, anyway?

So I did a quick search and found this recipe that sounds similar to what I can remember Mom doing (the Ivory Snow Soap Flakes gave it away) but I cannot for the life of me recall what Starch is made out of, flour or corn? So I don't know if it is quite appropriate for your little one...

Finger-paint:
3 C Vano Starch; 1 C Ivory Snow Soap Flakes; Powdered Tempera
Mix starch and soap under medium heat till it boils. Add tempera to color.

If not, this recipe ought to be vibrant and smelly enough to knock a horse over!

Jell-O Finger Paint:
Jell-O; boiling Water
Use enough boiling water to make it goo consistencies for finger-paint. Use you normal finger-painting material or glossy paper.

Have fun!

We cheated and used just used the kids paint that we had and swirled it around (since we were doing the reverse method -- swirl on table then put the paper down).

But here's another fingerpaint recipe that's kind of similar:
1/2 c. cornstarch
1 c. cold water
1 env. unflavored gelatin
2 c. hot water
1/2 c. soap flakes or detergent
Liquid food coloring

Mix gelatin and 1/4 c. water - set aside to soak. Put cornstarcch and 3/4 c. cold water in saucepan -- stir ntil dissolved. Add hot water and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until boiling and looks clear. Remove from heat. Blend softened gelatin. Add soap flakes and stir until lump free. Cool. Divide into 5 jars. Add food coloring until the color desired.

WE HAVE NOT DONE THIS YET -- JUST FOUND IT. Elizabeth also has one posted on her preschool series under "art" and I think she has some options for experimenting with natural dyes?? Can't remember.
