In the next few weeks and I am looking for some books to have them read. We are using All Ye lands as the spine but I want them to read some living history books also. The two who will be doing this are 12 and 14.Has anyone viewed the movies "The Keys of the Kingdom" or "The Inn of the Sixth Happiness"? Should we watch them?

We will study Ancient to current time on both of these places I can get current ideas for Japan from Dawn's ideas on Japan. But what I am looking for is some books for the more older time period of each country.
Thanks for the ideas!
Jackie

I just watched the Inn with my dc and I loved it, not to sure whether they were that interested then again they are younger than yours.

Not too sure of book titles to suggest.

I'm afraid I can't help on the movies ("Inn" is on my list of things to see this year.)

It's such a huge topic ... Have you sifted through this thread yet?

I love Inn of the Sixth Happiness! I think they'd be ok to watch it.

Have you checked Sonlight's book list for their core that covers Ancient China and Japan?

Can I ask something? I'm considering using All Ye Lands as a spine next year to compliment some Christian Cottage unit studies (great hands-on suggestions). Does the All Ye Lands teacher's manual have suggestions for extra reading and hands-on activities?

I see you have a daughter in the Benedictines. Awesome! My 12yod has been saying since she was 4 that she wants to be a nun. Maybe your daughter would be willing to correspond with her and encourage her in a vocation to religious life?

When we studied Japan, last year, our local library didn't have anything on the ancient time period, except for this. There was a tiny bit in Story of the World, but now I can't recall if it covered Japan, China, or both. I think it kind of lumped them together.

I know you have resources for more current, but I didn't notice this one, and can't resist adding it. My boys (11 and 8) loved it. In going over SOTW, for the Middle Ages, it ties in so well. SOTW talks about how the Japanese were afraid of outside influences ruining their culture and way of life. This book, Shipwrecked, is the true story of some men, and a teen, who are swept away from their Japanese home, while fishing, how they are rescued by an American ship, and how they cannot go back to their country, as no "outside" peoples are allowed near it. It is a really interesting story of how the teen grows up and ultimately finds a way back to Japan, and effects the changes in their "foreign policy" to allow others to visit their country. Yes, I enjoyed it too!

If you come up with any living books on the ancient Japanese, please let us know. I will be back there in another 3 years, and with my younger set, then, too!

God Bless,

Thanks everyone for the replies. I checked out the 2 movies from the library and we will watch these next week. Still searching for some living books though!

JennyMaine, I wish she could write your daughter but they are only allowed three letters a month! You can check out the order on the web at www.benedictinesofmary.org if you would like their mailing address pm and I can get it for you. Your daughter can write Mother Theresa and she will write your daughter. Also she can have her name added to their mailing list. And yes All Ye Lands does have ideas for books and movies. That is where I found the idea for these two movies but they really didn't have any books listed for these 2 units. Hope this info is helpful!

God bless,
Jackie

When we studied the Jesuits in history, we ended watched "Inn" and really did love it. Then my children read a book on Gladys Aylward (sp?) and her life as a missionary. It was a good tie-in. We read chapters from Hillyer's "Childs Geography of the World" which was also good---dated, but entertaining. We also used a great little book published by Emmanuel Books, I think, called something history of the world, world history---what WAS that title? Grrrr. Anyway, it was a slim, white, paperback book, had very good info about Jesuits in India,Japan and China. If I can find it I'll let you know the title! We also read sections of RIchard Halliburton's "Book of Wonders: the Orient" and enjoyed that quite a lot, especially the older kids (and Mom). The Usborne Book of World History also had good, tho short, sections on these cultures for the younger set.

I'm going to look for that book "Shipwrecked"-it sounds great, Jodie.

For Japan, we stumbled upon a back issue of "Catholic Home Educator" that had a very interesting section on the Catholic faith in Japan, the Martyrs of Nagasaki and others. Very good.

In terms of other books, some that we read were:
CHINA
-Young Fu of the Upper Yangtze -Elizabeth Foreman Lewis
-Homesick: My Own Story - Jean Fritz (great book!)
-Mission to Cathay-@ Fr. Matteo Ricci -Madeleine Polland
-a couple of "Girls of Many Lands" books that were good
-Life and Death in Shanghai -Nien Cheng - very sobering, a book for adults or mature teens, but very good---about the author's suffering and incarceration during the Cultural Revolution

JAPAN
-a series of mysteries in which the hero is a young samurai boy, I think the title of one was "Ghost in the Tea House" My older children really liked these books.
-The Samurai (I think that's the title) based on the true story of Hasekura Tsunanaga (sp?) who went to Europe as a representative of his daimyo, ultimately became Christian (the Duke of Lerma in Spain was his godfather,he was baptised in the Cathedral in Toledo!) and went on to meet the Pope. When he returned to Japan, Japan had closed to Christians and he was ultimately put to death. This is a very thought provoking book, but also for adults or mature teens, for its profundity, nothing racy

We also watched edited portions of James Clavell's "Shogun" with Richard Chamberlin.

We checked out some books from the library about China and Japan, geography-type books, but honestly, nobody liked them much. Too dry.

PS Boy, can you tell I'm tired-I really botched up that email! Anyway, I just wanted to add that "Inn" has absolutely nothing to do with the Jesuits, but our study of the Jesuits took us to China, which in turn took us on a general China Studies spree. Sorry for the confusion.

Jackie,
I don't know if I'm chiming in too late, but I found this while doing a search for something else tonight.
Easy funschool unit lessons. Just scroll down and you'll find units on ancient china and japan.

I will check it more closely later today when I have more time, but it looks great! Thanks for the help!

God bless, Jackie

I watched the Inn of the Sixth Happiness last night and it was EXCELLENT!   I'm planning to write a review of it on my blog today. It's long, but well worth the time. If nothing else, you certainly get a "feel" for the terraine!!

We watched both movies and the kids and I give them a thumbs up! The Keys to the Kingdom was quite funny at times.

Paula, yes I got the free downloads. Thanks! Couldn't believe the timing on that!

Thanks again everyone!

God bless,
