Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I really, really want to write a review of this movie but don't have time.

The kids and I all went yesterday to see it. Even the 5 yr old enjoyed it.    They all want a copy of it when it comes out on DVD.

No curse words (the cowboy just says "Dang" and "Dadgumit"). That's as racy as it gets.

Not too scary at all.

No xxx scenes.

It's a nice, clean family movie that will show your children that museums can be great places to visit and history can be a great subject to study.

I give it a:
- rating.

Talk about resurrecting a book from the dead.

It started with a children's picture book by Milan Trenc:

There is now a junior novelization out:

I'm so glad you posted the review, Cay, and gave it a thumbs up. We also saw it a few days ago and generally those were my thoughts as well - family oriented and a great promotion of knowing history. I was going to post also but I'm always so concerned about giving something like that a clean review on these forums because I don't know everyone's standards. I am nervous that what I think it okay might still not be to someone else. In the movie there are a couple of masked references to things that are a bit crude, but so totally over my kids heads, one "O God" - not in prayer , and then there was the monkey peeing on the guard to get the potty humor in - oh yeah and the standard divorced parents.

We have the Milan Trenc picture book from when my 18 year old was a pre-schooler. He is quite the history buff and maybe it's because his history reading started early . Anyway, he was talking with friends at college about the movie - they all wanted to see it because Ben Stiller is very popular with that crowd. He told them it was based on a book and no one believed him. Living literature education - he knows his books.

Mary, If a movie don't have potty humor, I won't waste my time seeing it! J/K!

I'm glad to hear it's a good one, the kids saw a preview and were interested. Of course we'll have to wait for the DVD!

Mary,
I know exactly what you mean. But...

...the fact that it was a monkey peeing on the guard helps a little. I mean, come on, it was a monkey! At least it wasn't the caveman.

The divorced parents...

I have to admit I thought of this while watching it but the parents don't fight or argue. And the guy gets this job at the musuem to prove to his son that he isn't a deadbeat dad. And the quotes by President Roosevelt to the dad.

I've been meaning to look them up to see if these quotes are attributed to Roosevelt.

The movie is clean.
The movie isn't anywhere near scary.
There are no curse words. That alone is reason to give Hollywood a .
The kids loved it...all the way from ages 40-5.

And it was so great seeing a nice promotion for history and museum...something that CCMers having been doing for years. I'll bet folks will take the likes of us a bit more seriously now.

Edited to add: Did you notice at the very end of the movie how he snaps his fingers and flashlight goes off? We so encourage our children to be creative and inventive and reach for their dreams. This guy did accomplish something, but no one took him seriously.

Also, I got a hoot seeing Dick Van Dyke and Mickey Rooney on the big screen again.

Marianna and I saw a preview of this when we went to see The Nativity Story, I'm so pleased it sounds like a great movie! I think we might spend some $$$ and go see it in the theatre as I can imagine that dinosaur is way more impressive on a large screen than it would be on our computer screen on the boat!

We all loved it!

I do think there was one swear word , a*s*s something but I can't remember what exactly, jacka** or dumba** or something with that in it. I just remember thinking "uh oh" and kept my ears open for more. Other than that I didn't hear anything.

This is one we will get on DVD when it comes out.

My girls said it was SO WRONG to have THOSE guys be bad guys.

The other movie my dh and I went to see was Deck the Halls. That movie was hillarious! I can't remember what if any swear words were in it but I would say it is for adults and older teens. If you want a good laugh, this is it! I was laughing so hard, I was in tears.

Blessings,
Krisann

My dh took our older children and some of their friends (ages 7-17) and they all loved it!

From Ian: I liked how the guy did not quit and how it was so funny. I liked the monkey. I just liked a lot of things.

From Devin: I liked that the dad wasn't portrayed as a doofus dad in need of redemption. He just needed a way for his son to see him rightly. There was a tiny bit of potty humor (yuck) but it wasn't obsene. The special effects were great as were all the actors. There was a moral (As Teddy Roosevelt would say, "There are some who are born great and some who have greatness thrust upon them) but it wasn't heavy-handed. It was very, very, funny and a big crowd-pleaser. Only caution: If you have a little kid who gets worried mid movie, you can promise them that there will be a happy ending.

Love,

I'm happy to hear positives about this as Isabella asked that in lieu of a birthday party this year, we go as a family to see this... what a kid!

Coming out of lurkdom (and the SECOND blizzard this month) to say thanks to Cay and Mary M for posting about how good this is ... we've decided to go see it as a family for an early bday present for Thomas... we'll add the picture book, a family membership to the Denver Museum, etc.... what a great package deal!

THANKS folks for posting!

Do you ever notice that people in movie theatres laugh at different parts of the film that you do? Or is is just me?    The urinating monkey got lots of laughs but the Roman and Hun jokes left me laughing alone (with my kids).

Anyway, the kids liked it, but I thought the whole cliched divorced wife criticism of the father was tiresome. The rest was just fun, especially the Neanderthals.

Did anyone else notice that I said "cavemen" and MacBeth said "Neanderthals"?    I sure hope not.

That shows the extent of my education compared to MacBeth's.

While I would dearly, dearly, dearly love to visit MacBeth and Mary Ellen and Alice and Helen in real life, I fear they would think I was a complete dumb broad.    Oh, that's right...I am!

Not at all, Cay! It's just a funny habit; like all vocabulary, we use some words more than others. It's a reflection of a different experience, not a measure of intelligence.

If you ever venture up here (please do), we'll all great you with joy ! And I know you could teach me more than a few things !

Quite the opposite, Cay! I would go around with pride introducing you to every single person in our homeschooling group as my extremely accomplished, but always nice and never full of herself, friend!

Why don't you come stay with us to see first hand?    I guarantee MacBeth, Mary Ellen and Helen will all be there to welcome you!

Oh, the day is coming. We can have our own Night at the Museum.

I was just thinking about it today. I'd love to go before my oldest dd starts college. I don't travel without the younger two and I know Kayleigh would just love all of you.      She gets excited when we are around hsing mothers with large families. She says they always make her want a large family. I'm afraid while she's living the chaos of ours, she has second thoughts. I really want to push her in the right directions. I think right now she's figuring she'll have four or so. I think that's a good start towards a large family.

And Chelsea wants desperately to go to the American Girls place. Desperately!

Of course, she's also been begging to go to Colonial Williamsburg because she just finished all the Felicity American Girl books. (She knows proper tea etiquette better than I do!!! ) So that means a trip to Virginia and the nation's capital (did I spell that correctly???) And I can't go up the east coast without visiting Amish country.

Oh, wow! I sure hope I write a bestseller that will finance this trip.
